No one can deny that car accident is huge problem nowadays. A car accident is part of an endless list of problems on the road. Car accidents can happen to drivers anytime, anywhere. In general, about twenty million people die or become injured due to car accidents each year nationwide. Among the car accidents, the teenage group is the only age group who is number of deaths is increasing instead of decreasing. Then why are the car accidents happening? Actually there are many causes and effects of cars accident. But there are three main reasons that lead to the most serious car accidents. First, drinking and driving is the leading cause of car accidents. Each year, thousands of car accidents with drunk drivers cause tragedy and grief, making it one of the top causes of automobile accidents. Drinking impairs your senses (vision and hearing) and results in decreased muscle coordination and slower reaction times — not a good combination for driving a car. For example, when people get drunk, they do not even think they are drunk. They may feel like they can do anything. But they cannot. Many accidents occur because of drinking. These accidents involve mostly one car, but other people are killed by drunk drivers. People have to be educated about drinking and driving, so they do not kill themselves or innocent people on the road. Secondly, Driving should take your full attention, looking away for a split second can cause an accident. This includes things like changing the stereo, using a mobile phone, interacting with passengers and even slowing down to look at scenery or other accidents. Using cell phones while driving causes car accidents. When a cell phone is used while driving, it distracts the attention of the driver, leading to car accidents. While using a cell phone many people tend to miss the traffic signals. Mobile phones could visually distract drivers in two ways. Firstly, drivers have to move their eyes from the road and focus on the mobile

Distractions, such as talking or texting on a cell phone, can cause drivers to take their eyes off the road for a few seconds, long enough to have difficulty responding to hazards and staying in their lane. These seemingly innocuous acts also can affect their mental focus. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that cell phone use behind the wheel actually reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent ("A dangerous distraction," 2013). A report from the University of Utah (search) says when motorists between 18 and 25 talk on cell phones, they drive like elderly people — moving and reacting more slowly and increasing their risk of accidents ("Study: Teens on," 2005). It doesn't matter whether the phone is hand-held or hands-free. Any activity requiring a driver to "actively be part of a conversation" likely will impair driving abilities ("Study: Teens on," 2005). A 1997 Canadian study published in The New England Journal of Medicine used phone records to evaluate cell phone use patterns. Crash risk was found to be four times greater when drivers were using a cell phone, whether hand-held or hands-free. A more recent study using simulators published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology reported similar findings ("A dangerous distraction," 2013).…

First of all, distraction is one of the major causes leading to accidents. From the moment of picking up the phone, to read a text, to the moment it is being put back down, there is a loss of sight from the road which could either result in a life threatening accident, or a lucky escape from a life threatening accident. A Nationwide survey has shown that 45 percent of Americans said they've either been hit or nearly hit by a driver on a cell phone (Saletan 2). It is a split second of loss of focus on the road that could cost someone their life. Texting while driving makes people lose vision from the road and makes them forget what is going on around them, and that is what makes it so dangerous. One study showed that “the more tasks you dump on drivers—listening, evaluating, answering questions—the worse they perform. They drift off course, miss cues, overlook hazards, and react slowly. It's the picture of a mind being sucked from one world into another”(Saletan 2). All of these add up to a series of events which can occur to a driver while texting behind the wheel who did not even notice what happened. That is when they suddenly look up and try to react in time while it is actually already too late to react, and they end up in an accident. People do not see the real danger of it until either they themselves experience a life threatening accident while texting and…

The use of cell phones while driving causes the driver to be distracted. “According to Major Huxtable, cell phone use can distract a driver’s attention from traffic and road conditions” (Wisconsin Department of Transportation). As technology advances more and more people are starting to own cell phones often times at such a young age. “The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 11 percent of all drivers under the age of 20 involved in fatal crashes were distracted at the time of the crash…this age group has the largest proportion of drivers who were distracted” (Wisconsin Department of Transportation). The use of cell phones while driving distracts the driver’s attention from the road, can affect their behaviors while driving, and can cause major to minor traffic accidents. Many states have created laws to prohibit the use of hand held devices while driving and that driver’s are required to use hands-free devices when driving a vehicle. In article from USA Today, “More than 250 bills prohibiting or restricting cell phone use while driving are pending in 42 state legislatures despite disagreement over the risk cell phones pose and the effectiveness of enforcement” (O’Donnell, 2009).…

In addition, another reason why you shouldn’t be on your phone and drive is that it can increase death rates. Furthermore everyone drives and goes on their phone the chance of a crash and someone dying goes way up. SpringBoard says, “That combination of the 3: Visual, manual, and the cognitive distraction significantly increase the crash risk.” If everyone’s looking at their phone and not paying attention they will most likely crash. Another quote from SpringBoard, “They’re not looking at the road. They’re not staying in their lane. They’re missing traffic…

In the study conducted by David L. Strayer and Frank A. Drews the researchers examined the effects of operating hands free devices mainly cell phones for this study, while performing driving tasks in order to determine just how much the devices can divert or distract the operator of the vehicle during their use. The authors conducted four different experimental studies with various scenarios as a means to pinpoint and observe whether an individual can operate a vehicle and still be able to concentrate their attention to the task at hand. The reason the study was performed was because earlier data in another study suggested that drivers had a slower reaction time while operating hands free devices and this also made the driver more susceptible to running traffic lights. However, in the study it was…

Driving can be very dangerous on its own without distractions but when you add driving while using a cell phone in the mix you have the perfect ingredients for a disaster. I believe cell phones are very dangerous while driving by using them for voice and especially texting and should be banned. Some reasons I believe this is when a driver is talking on the phone they are focusing more on the conversation than driving. The second reason is when your texting you are looking down and also not focusing on the road. Lastly cell phones are basically mini computers now and if a driver receives an email and believes that they must answer the email at that time can also cause an accident because they are not focused on the road.…

Cell phone use in the car is just as dangerous as drunk driving. “[W]hether it’s hand-held or hands-free, [it] delays a driver 's reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent” (Statistics and Facts About Distracted Driving). A person on the phone may get distracted or carried away with the conversation, making it a dangerous drive. When on the phone, people do not look carefully and do not notice their surroundings. Instead, they are fixated on the conversation that they are having with the person on the other side of the line. Many collisions and even deaths have resulted from this careless behavior. There have been “32,000 traffic accidents caused by distracted drivers,” says The AAA Foundation of Traffic Safety that released a study by the University of North Carolina Highway…

People all around the world drink and they also drive. But driving under the influence of alcohol is a very dangerous, risk taking thing to do, not just to the drivers, but to the passengers and pedestrians as well. When people consume alcohol, their normal functioning of the brain impairs, thus increasing the chances of having a fatal accident when chosen to drive. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 40% of the car accidents in the year 2002 were alcohol related in US. That is about 17,419 deaths. This meant that in average, every 30 minutes someone was killed in a car accident that was relating alcohol.…

Everyday distractions take away a lot from a driver and his/her ability to drive well. Cell phones are yet another horrible habit while driving from talking to text messaging. For instance I was on my way to school when the car in front of me slammed on his/her brakes as did I and when looking into my rearview mirror hoping to see if the car behind was going to be able to stop in time all I saw was a girl with both hands on her phone text messaging someone, I know this…

The use of cell phones while driving has become a large issue in the modern world and is, in my opinion, the biggest distraction while driving. In the past couple years, there have been laws passed to try to stop people from using cell phones while on the road. These laws have lowered the amount of cellphone usage while driving, but it is still a big problem. I believe that these laws are for the best of the people and are only for the safety of drivers and pedestrians. Three of the biggest distractions that cell phones can provide while driving is texting, calling, and social media.…
