The biggest challenge facing college students today is accountability. I say accountability because we live in time where everyone is rewarded for everything that they do whether it deserves an award or not. We live in a world where political correctness is hurting the children of my generation. I see this in my peers and sometimes in myself and it’s not a pleasant thing. The students currently in college represent the shift in thinking and rearing of children. The students and the ones whose parents/teachers were told what they could and could not do all the things they were taught as children were no longer acceptable. Students are essentially free when they begin college life. They are free to make their own decisions about their life and take responsibility for themselves when it comes to making decisions about their future. But sadly colleges have become too standardized for students, thus taking away from their individuality and freedom to make decisions by providing the students with requirements and pre-requisites that they need to fulfill to graduate with a specific degree. Colleges should not only record and base the majority of their results on quantitative data, but rather on qualitative data to illuminate certain characteristics within students that are hidden when grades are all that matter. The idea of college is becoming one of conformity rather than one of individuality, which it should be.
