Accentricities Of A Nightingale Character Analysis
In the University of Alabama production of “The Eccentricities of A Nightingale”, all of the actors made their characters their own and I was really impressed with the way it turned out. One of Tennessee William's themes of the play is alienation and isolation, which I felt from not only Alma’s character, but also even form Ross Birdsong, who performed John’s character. I could feel his isolation from having a controlling mother who is constantly obsessed with him and controlling a lot of what he does, I saw it very subtly but I loved the dimensions he put into that character, I really felt this during the scene of the …show more content…
Just from the look on Ross Birdsong’s face made me think how John’s character probably grew up not being able to go or do things he wanted to if his mother found them a waste of time, silly, or something that would not reflect them image she wanted her family to have. In the paytext, I really disliked Alma's father and thought he was just being over controlling, but after watching William Green’s performance of the role, I really started to feel sympathy for the character. I remember during the panel, that Green’s major goal for his character was to make the audience understand his struggles more effectively. He wanted the audience to feel sympathy for the pastor’s struggles and problems instead of judging him based on his lines or actions. I realized halfway through the play what Reverend Winemiller’s motivation was: fear. His wife had completely gone mad and lost her senses leaving the pastor scared and unsure how to handle it. While on the surface level he acted embarrassed of his

John prefers Rev. Merrill because his sermons reassure parishioners that “doubt [is] the essence of faith, and not faith’s opposite.” (114). Owen, on the contrary, doesn’t enjoy Reverend’s preaching. He says that “belief is not an intellectual matter” he continues to even criticize Merrill saying “if he’s got so much doubt, he’s in the wrong business.” (115). John states that “[he is] a Christian because of Owen Meany” (3) and therefore Owen’s take on faith proves highly influential. By the time that John reaches his full potential, this point is strongly accented. John visits Reverend Merrill regarding Owen’s death and faith comes up. When The Reverend reveals to John that he is John’s father he speaks in the voice of Owen Meany, bringing John to trust a miracle occurred. Merrill does…

To say that there is no good in evil is to deny the very reality of evil’s existence. Black and white thinking such as the topic previously stated is what truly can hurt us the most. When you look at moral issues you must acknowledge that it is a grey spectrum, with many different viewpoints. If I told any person who has actually read East of Eden that I admired Cathy? They would think me insane and possibly give me some nasty looks, as well as cross the street when I walk past. But since you have to read this essay, I think it’s fair that I make my point. Cathy is a real go-getter, she does what she has to to make ends meet. She isn’t easily swayed, and has a strong moral foundation, whether or not it’s a good one is a moot point. Lastly, she’s not easily discouraged. Even in the face of direct adversity, she brushes herself off and keeps on trucking.…

At the age of ten, most children are dependent on their parents for everything in their lives needing a great deal of attention and care. However, Ellen, the main character and protagonist of the novel Ellen Foster, exemplifies a substantial amount of independence and mature, rational thought as a ten-year-old girl. The recent death of her mother sends her on a quest for the ideal family, or anywhere her father, who had shown apathy to both she and her fragile mother, was not. Kaye Gibbons' use of simple diction, unmarked dialogue, and a unique story structure in her first novel, Ellen Foster, allows the reader to explore the emotions and thoughts of this heroic, ten-year-old girl modeled after Gibbons' own experiences as a young girl.…

After coming to terms and understanding the death of his father, John constructed a quite beautiful, yet short and sweet stanza to sum up what he would to growing up as a man in the village of Salem and how he will live life. It says, “One may fool the hearts of many yet not get pass through to me, and although I might be condemned I must look where there is plea, and help those around to view through the lens I may look through, and do my best to do good whenever I may come by to you.” Although he directed his feelings towards myself and Rebecca, the actions of those words resonate throughout our village and the good work he does. John stood for respect, goodwill, and his undeniable selflessness. And although he had made mistakes along the way, he understood they were unjust but repented and did his best to make it right. John could always be seen around the corner trying to help out either fixing Mr. Jacobs wagon, or even carrying the heavy bags of wheat into the home of the…
