Home Depot has three basic strategies: assortment, price, and service. They carry the broadest range of merchandise priced below every competitor in every market where they compete. Lowe’s reported similar values when it came to their customers. They said that their top values are customer focused, respect, and passion for execution. In their letter to shareholders, Lowe’s said, “We know that providing great service is the driving force behind profitable sales and market share growth, and we feel our commitment to delivering great service has Lowe’s uniquely positioned to capitalize as the economy bottoms and home improvement demand improves.” After reading about all that each company reported about themselves we decided to see for ourselves. When we went to Home Depot and asked for help in a specific category the salesman pointed us in the right direction but did not help us out. He was not as helpful as he could have been. At Lowe’s one salesman helped us and showed us around the whole store. Therefore, we concluded that Lowe’s employees have a broader base of knowledge in all aspects while Home Depot hires past tradesmen who have knowledge in one specified area.…

Richard Penn is the president of an architectural firm. He lives in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and has become known throughout to community for excellent work and honesty in his business dealings. Richard believes his reputation is a fundamental part of the success of the firm. Oil was found recently in the area around Harrisburg and some geologists believed the reserves were large. A few well-respected businesspeople organized Oil Company to develop a few wells. Although some oil was being extracted, the oil corporation lacked capital to develop the oil fields to their expected potential. Richard read the geologists report and felt that it would be a good investment so he acquired 25% of the company. A short period afterwards, the price of the oil decreased sharply and the drop in foreign oil prices caused the Oil Company to be unprofitable due to its high production costs and eventually they filed bankruptcy. Due to the bankruptcy, the architectural firm noticeably decreased, and Richard felt as if that was why. Richard convinced his partner to use the accumulated earnings of the firm to repay all the creditors of Oil Company. The question to be determined is whether payments by a taxpayers firm, are deductible from repaying Oil Company’s creditors. So in determining this issue I will be looking into Sec 162, the case of Thomas H. Welch v. Helvering and William A. Thompson.…

The word "tax" did not become a household name until the late 1800 's when congress created the nation 's first income tax law. Prior to this law the government used tariff 's and imported goods to help support the economy. However, in order to bring in more revenue to help cover the costs of the civil war the government had to make necessary reforms and re-establish tax law. The Revenue Act of 1862 (July 1, 1862, Ch 119, 12 Stat. 432), signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln, is the stepping stone to the modern income tax statutes of today. It is based on "principles of graduated, or progressive, taxation and of withholding income at the source" (History of the Income Tax in the United States, 2000, ¶2). During this time the government collected over 300 million dollars, the highest in the nation 's history.…
