Welcome to Academic Writing!
This resource has been designed for Massey University students who are new to the conventions of academic writing. Many students, including extramural, internal, and both domestic and international, may find this book useful, especially as the examples provided are not limited to a specific discipline. The book offers advice and guidance on how to write university assignments, including a section on the writing process with particular reference to essays. Another section deals with the basics of report writing, incorporating sub-sections on business report writing as well as lab report writing. When writing university assignments, referencing the work of others is integral, hence there are sections on integrating the opinions of authors into your assignments, as well as how to construct a Reference List at the end of your assignment.
As a student for many years, as well as an academic author of research publications, I have designed the book to help new students with their journey into academic writing. Rather than becoming aware of the features of academic writing through trial and error, as I have done, it is hoped that this resource will fast track you through to many of the key requisites underlying academic assignments. Indeed, that is why there are sections introducing you to marking guides, and lecturers and course co-ordinators’ expectations surrounding university assessments. Further, having personally experienced the paralysing effects of procrastination and perfectionism, I have added some advice and guidance, towards the end of the book, for managing these commonly encountered obstacles to successful writing. A final section provides a range of resources

    Bedford Handbook Analysis

In revising The Bedford Handbook, our goal was to continue to respond to students by helping them make the most of their college writing experiences. Part of our revision plan — crafted with my fellow contributors and Diana Hacker’s longtime editorial team — was to learn firsthand what’s happening in composition classrooms and writing centers across the country. With our plan in mind, I visited more than thirty-five colleges and universities to listen to students, teachers, and tutors talk about the challenges facing today’s college writers. Throughout my travels, I heard students puzzle out the unfamiliar elements of academic writing, particularly those related to working with sources. I watched creative teachers show their students how to build arguments, synthesize sources, and strengthen their ideas through revision. I observed writing center tutors responding to students’ questions about thesis statements and research assignments. And I listened, everywhere, for clues about how to develop a better, more useful reference. The eighth edition is inspired by the students, teachers, and tutors at these schools — and by the candid feedback offered by users of The Bedford Handbook’s earlier…

The teaching of writing courses has become a controversial issue in recent years, especially at the first-year level. It is said that the general courses in a college curriculum, the freshman composition course or course sequence can serve multiple agendas—some the result of tradition, others the result of new curricular pressures, still others the result of particular teaching conditions or student needs.…

After spending the past year learning writing techniques from Professor Kruse in Composition I and II, I now possess writing skills that will help me succeed in my future college classes. The Little Brown Handbook has been a helpful resource, and I will continue to utilize it in my future writing. Also The Craft of Research has been a helpful tool especially for understanding the vocabulary of acknowledgment and response. I know I have the skills needed to be successful because of my planning, drafting, editing and revising skills I have acquired.…

In 2002, the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs of The George Washington University, Dr. Donald Lehman, determined that writing by students should be an area on which to place strategic excellence. Freshmen were required to take the obligatory first-year courses (UW20~University Writing), but the administration realized that writing is a process, not a product. As one faculty member put it, “Writing is not an inoculation.” Writing skills are not something a student acquires in one semester. Writing is not easy. Expressing a series of coherent thoughts on a written page (or computer screen) is challenging. Nevertheless, the ability to do so is important for long-term professional success. Therefore the administration decided that students would benefit from additional writing courses as they settled into their majors ─ i.e. writing in their discipline.…

My current reading and writing skills are in my opinion on par for my level of expertise. I have a fairly in depth knowledge of how to talk to someone using correct words and sentences. I completed an associate’s degree from another college and that have helped to expand my horizons in this field. My reading skills are on par as well, I like to read books ranging from school curriculum to murder mystery novels by James Patterson. I grew up with just my mother playing both parent roles in my home and because of that I believe that she has always pushed me to strive to learn more and do better with my education, thus constantly making me read when I was younger. I don’t think that I realized the ramifications of those actions because I remember vividly that I disliked reading in my younger years.…

Writing papers is, for many students, a difficult, trying, and intimidating task. This is truly unfortunate because typically at least half of the courses students take in college use paper-writing as a form of academic exercise. Expressing yourself well in writing is often a crucial skill in the professional world. Yet whereas being articulate and knowledgeable in written composition in the workplace is a prized skill, academic writing demands even more. To do academic writing you must not only develop the ability to express yourself in words but also the ability to gather information from a variety of sources and select and present relevant nuggets of fact from those sources. You must be able to appropriately sprinkle in your own observations, determinations and conclusions. And you must document precisely where you obtained your facts. Academic writing is not about expressing your own opinions alone but rather expressing facts established by others and your reasoned observations and conclusions based on them. What makes paper-writing a dread to many students? My observation, after two decades of teaching at the college level, is that the answer to this question is simple. The dread comes from not knowing how to do it. No one teaches you a method for going about it! You’ll find any number of references on how to format bibliographic entries, how to use search engines, how to create an outline, and how to use word processors. But you very likely won’t find a short, simple description of a modern method to locate and extract information, build a paper in stages, and scale the effort to the rigor of the assignment. I have looked, and I haven’t found such a thing. It took me a long while to realize that this was sorely needed. I hope to cure this deficiency in this brief document. I’ve arranged this method in numbered steps. Start with step 1 and continue to step 15. 1. Start…

In 1960 Chinese were allowed to have as many children as possible. It was even a good omen for the country1. In 1979 the Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping established the one-child policy because of the overpopulation. His aim was to limit China’s population growth. The current state of the Chines population is about more than 1.3 billion people, and thus the largest population in the word. By 2015, the population of the country should be less than 1.3 billion.…
