Academic Skills Week 2 Tasks
Task 1
Example of a good introduction:
Over the last five years, higher education lecturers have experienced a significant downturn in the quality of written work produced by students. For example, one of the important sections of any essay, the introduction, is often poorly written, providing nothing more than background information, or not included. McDonald has identified that: ‘Academic introductions are becoming a neglected part of an assignment by many students’ (2008). Traditionally, these skills have been taught prior to students attending university. There is an increasing concern amongst academic staff that the lack of a clear introduction, demonstrates poor attention to detail and effort on the part of the student. However, research has shown that first year students have not attained the necessary understanding of academic writing to incorporate the necessary sections into their written work. The objective of this research is to determine through the use of questionnaires the level of knowledge students have in writing introductions when entering university. The questionnaires will be provided to students to complete during their induction to university, prior to their programme of study commencing. The data collected from the questionnaires will be analysed to identify where the gaps are in the students knowledge where writing introductions are concerned. Once these gaps have been identified, appropriate training and study skills sessions can be implemented by universities to increase the student’s ability to write introductions.
Example of a poor introduction:
All students have poor study skills. Study skills can make a real difference for students. They can help students to complete their work and allow for more time for them to socialise with their friends. I like to socialise with my friends as it is an important part of life. One of my friends likes to socialise far more than the others, so it is difficult

An adept writer usually depends on an existing way of writing which they learnt from others. The basic procedures of academic writing can be found in the templates which would help students to be familiar with conventional writing patterns and to make more sounded arguments. The most essential template in the book is the “they say, I say” template that teaches students to react to the arguments made by other people. The authors believed that a well-argued academic writing should include the opinion of others so that readers will know why there is a need to make an argument. The arguments that writers respond to do not have to be an eminent writer or the audience. From the template, we can learn that we do not need to be restricted to agreement and disagreement. We can agree and disagree at the same time. In addition, templates can help students to make more complicated moves…

It seems in the society we live in today, having a college degree is a necessity. Years ago it was the norm for people to just go right into a full time job after high school, if they even finished high school; they did this to support their families. In today's society a person has a difficult time getting a decent job without a college degree. During an adults working life, bachelor degree graduates will earn about $2.1 million and a high school graduate can expect to earn an average of $1.2 million (Day and Newburger, 2002). This is quite a difference and it puts a college education in perspective. With college come the skills needed to be successful.…

In the article “Writing in College” by Joseph Williams presents writers with elements on revising the introduction and conclusion, and polishing the draft. Once a claim is made, supported, and qualified then the last draft is ready to be completed. An effective introduction is the first thing to start with. The point can be made clear at the end of the introduction or jump off without revealing the outline of the claim. Neither choice is right or wrong, but writers have to use their introduction to lead up to the main point or launching sentence. The introductions most important role is to briefly summarize the question or problem. Writers can ensure this by proposing an overlooked problem. This helps readers believe that the writer has identified…

In working with children in the after school activity program , I have five children which are eight years old that come on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for academic and social interaction skills. When the children first arrive for the first hour we work on their academics within a group. For the last hour we work on their social skills, working on crafts, playing games, and going outside to play outdoor games. On a sunny Monday morning I decide to take the children out for free play to watch how they interact with one another. Miranda one of the little girls within the group comes over to me crying. When I asked her what was wrong she stated that two of the other little girls named, Kiana and Vanessa will not play with her due to she does not look like them. I feel this is due to Miranda being of a different ethnic group as Kiana and Vanessa.…

Technology has reached a level of complexity which is beyond an average individual’s understanding. The development of brain-computer interface has provided many advantages which once seemed impossible. The internet, which we generally use on a day to day basis, has become a medium for information search, individual development, social networking and even marketing. Google is one of the greatest and most frequently used internet sites. The majority of people in today’s society automatically choose to consult a search engine- such as Google- when in need of quick information. People have learnt to depend on the internet without questioning or needing to understand how it works. Hence the internet encompasses an immense level of control, both mentally and globally. It was only a matter of time before someone would consider using the internet as a method of control for the human mind and habits. Sue Halpern’s article Mind Control & the Internet, discusses the growth of technology and unravels the intricate aspects of the internet which we seem to be oblivious to. The growth of technology is hard to grasp and thus it is difficult to determine whether the outcome is solely positive or if it is pushing mankind toward a dystopian world. Halpern’s use of evidence causes one to reflect on the function of the technology and consider the limitations of the internet and its level of control.…
