Academic Probation
My Personal Statement Basketball, Volleyball, Baseball, Bowling and God not in that order is what kept me motivated in school and my life heading in a positive direction. My name is and I am the middle/oldest of three boys. I am the middle son because I was the second child born to my mother and father who later divorced. My oldest brother, died at three months old of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Therefore I became the oldest living son. Little did I know that this incident would plague both me and my younger brother with an over protective mom. I seldom played with the children on my block because I was not allowed outside. I remember watching the children play out of my front windows and front door longing to join in the fun. There was no playing with my classmates because I live on the south side of Chicago and my grammar school and most of my friends were on the north side of Chicago; about ten miles apart at the least. My mother and I occasionally got into arguments about her being over protective of me. However, I now understand some of my mother’s (as a single parent) concerns regarding raising her sons in Chicago. My first two years of high school seemed very scary to me. I started following the wrong crowd because I believed that hanging with this crowd would protect me. With the help of some adult individuals, I later realized that I was headed in the wrong direction, so I turned to sports. Initially, I did not take sports seriously it was just something that allowed me to stay out with my peers. Later, I begin to enjoy sports. It sad to say that I did not take my grades seriously. If I had listened and been more attentive my GPA could have been at least 2.8. I am not proud of my GPA which is a 1.93 but I do believe that it is not a true reflection of my capabilities.
