Reality television is a genre of television programming in which the fortunes of "real life" people (as opposed to actors, or fictional characters) are followed. Although there have always been television programs that would satisfy this definition (e.g.Candid Camera, The Real World, etc), it is within the last two years that reality television has achieved its greatest success in hits such as the Survivor series, Temptation Island, Big Brother, Fear Factor and so on. What are reality TV shows?
Reality television is a genre of television programming that presents unscripted dramatic or humorous situations, documents actual events, and usually features ordinary people instead of professional actors, sometimes in a contest or other situation where a prize is awarded. Reality television began in 1948 with a TV series named Candid Camera. The genre exploded as a phenomenon around 1999–2000 with the success of such television series as Big Brother and Survivor. Programs in the reality television category are commonly called reality shows and often are produced in a television series. Documentaries, television news and sports television are usually not classified as reality shows.
Reality TV shows boom in Vietnam
This is the time of reality shows in Vietnam. Most of them are world famous programs brought to Vietnam by media firms and TV broadcasters as Dancing With the Stars, The perfect couple (Just The Two Of Us), Singing with the stars, Vietnam’s Got Talent, Vietnam’s Next Top Model, Vietnam Idol, Clash of the choirs, The Voice of Viet Nam are among reality shows on the national television system Vietnam Television or VTV.
VTV has just announced plans to produce two more reality shows – The Amazing Race. The Amazing Race has bought the copyright from the Disney Media Distribution, a world popular reality show, for Vietnam. The show has been broadcast for 20 seasons in the US and won 8 consecutive Emmy Awards.
However, when these reality shows are brought to Vietnam, their quality is not assured. Hence it is a challenge for producers to keep the audience watching their shows for a long time.
