Abuse Of Adderall

Research Question: Why is the abuse of Adderall on the rise with college and high school students? I picked this question because I have been hearing a lot about the rise in popularity of Adderall use among students. I also remembered Officer Rimell talking about it during her drug presentation. I wanted to find out why Adderall is being used, what it is being used for and why it is so popular among students.
Imagine being in college, you're stressed beyond anything you can imagine and you need a solution as to how to get all of your work done. Because Adderall stimulates the nervous system it causes people to have increased alertness and focus. Adderall also helps students stay awake longer to be able to work on a paper all night or cram for a test the next day. Since it helps students stay really focused it can be taken before a test so the student can be really attentive while taking the test. Some students have other motives when using Adderall such as using the drug for weight loss. Another effect of Adderall is weight loss. Adderall has the function to suppresses one's appetite. Because of its suppression of appetite, Adderall eventually causes weight loss. This usage of the drug is common for students suffering from eating disorders. Long term effects would include weakness or numbness in the arms or legs, chest pain, increased blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature. People who continually abuse Adderall experience heart problems. They also have trouble sleeping and abdominal pain. In addition to affecting physical health, Adderall also affects mental health. The effect the abuse of Adderall has on one’s mental health is significant. People who abuse Adderall are more likely to suffer from depression. They also experience panic attacks and anxiety because of the drug. Adderall abuse can be linked to other mental health illnesses such as schizophrenia and psychosis or hallucinations. Similar to marijuana, people lose motivation when they abuse Adderall and find it harder to concentrate on things.
