Parents trust us teachers with their children and believe the school will take every measure to help their child succeed. Policies must be made to protect the rights of individuals with special needs. People like Patti, Luis, and Bernard are beautiful, amazing individuals. They require only patience, love, and compassion. Geraldo Rivera said “All people need is humanity and compassion”, and special education needs reform and continue to improve.…
During the past 7 years I have had the opportunity to teach Students with Disabilities (SWD) at a high school level and also to train teachers, in my current position as a Special Education School Improvement Specialist with RSE-TASC (Regional Special Education Technical Assistance Center). Although the achievement gap is true for most student populations in NYC schools, the discrepancy is particularly daunting for the SWD and /ELL populations. In fact what we often find is that extraordinary numbers of ELL students are being referred to special education…
The article “The Lessons of Classroom 506” by Lisa Belkin is focused on the single experience of a family living in New York with their 5-year-old son Thomas, who has cerebral palsy. The family is trying to construct a classroom that would be appropriate for their son. Thomas was unable to speak and he needed a specially designed wheel chair that would help support his body weight. Thomas parents were worried that their son would not get the same opportunities as other children because of his physical disability although his thinking was just like children of his grade. After researching schools Thomas parents realized that it was impossible to find the right school for their son.…

These are all questions that many people have not ever considered. I know that I didn’t, until my current technology center teacher introduced the topic to me. Though it is an unheard and unreported subject, I have recently been investigating it. I think it’s agreeable to say that this subject is going to require some very outgoing and motivated advocates. In “Restraining Special Needs Students – A Practice…
A con that has raised much concern about the use of inclusion within the classroom is that teachers are not properly trained nor receive adequate support to teach a student with a disability. With teachers already struggling to provide appropriate education for students without disabilities due to rigorous standards and mounting pressure to perform, with such a large burden it becomes unrealistic for teachers to provide the attention needed and deserved for disabled students within a regular education classroom. With lack of training in specialized education areas, teachers are unable to properly serve disabled children and in turn these students are unable to receive an appropriate education accompanied by specialized attention and care needed in order to suitably benefit educationally.…

There are way to many people getting bullied every single day, and everyday after that they become a full time bully to. I honestly think that being a bully is worse because you are doing the pain to others, and thats just not very nice. Being a bully means your sinning against god, and you are practically worshipping the devil and thats never a good thing. Also your doing bad things for society, and everybody you love and you won't have as many friends if you bully people. Most of the time bullies are people that really don't have a good life or a very rich life. If your a bully you will have a less likely chance to make to collage and get a wife, and have kids. Some bullies are jealous of other people, and want to be them, but can't…
The school-to-prison pipeline is a devastating part of reality for all too many students. The pipeline in definition is simply a term representing the tendency for certain students to easily end up in prison during or shortly after schooling. To decrease this tendency, it is important that teachers are aware of the issue and that the community as a whole works to implement policies that actually work, and eliminate the ones that strengthen the pipeline. Looking specifically at the pipeline amongst individuals with disabilities, it is evident that the population of those with disabilities is highly overrepresented within the prison system (Elias, 2013). Part of understanding the pipeline involves understanding the prevalence of minorities in the pipeline, looking at school’s zero tolerance policies and knowing what teachers can do in order to diminish the pipeline.…

Charter Schools are not enrolling kids with disabilities and those who are in poverty. This selective enrollment will lead to charter schools avoiding kids who need extra help for a variety of reasons. Manly they do not have the facilities to support these children yet they persist that they enrollee everyone. While on the other side public schools enroll everyone including those who academic skills need some extra help improving. Charter schools are schools that are private own and rely on donations from politicians and the public to help run their schools. However they are not fully regulated by the government like public schools are. So it is not unknown that charters school can get…
In 2001 the Department for Education released a document stating that parents of children with special educational needs should be supported whether they choose to send their child to a mainstream, or a special school (p.6). In addition to this their document titled Special Educational Needs: Code of Practice, “enhances the rights of children with special educational needs to be included within mainstream schooling” (2001). Collectively, these points imply the government is trying to support parents and children with special educational needs with school…
