1.0 Abstract

The purpose of this session is to demonstrate the concept of a single phase gas flow through a porous media. The method that used in this lab is the nitrogen gas (Reslab digital gas permeameter). In addition, the gas flow expressed by the Darcy’s equation which relates volumetric flow and pressure drop with the properties of the fluid and media.

The permeability is the production capacity of hydrocarbon reservoirs because it measure of how a reservoir fluid moves through the interconnected rock pores. It is usually measured at a confining pressure of about 300 to 400 psi on both horizontal and vertical core plugs. Permeability information play a role in determining where in the reservoir production tests should be performed.

In this report we are going to show the result that we obtained from the experiment as well as the discussion. Then on the conclusion the result will be given with a suggested recommendations. The key result is that the gas permeability is close to each other in both methods by equation and slope. A and C samples are sandstone, for this reason their permeability’s are within 100 and 1000 md. Moreover, their permeability’s are within 50 and 250 which prove that the quality of the permeability’s is good.

    The purpose of this experiment is to conduct different experiments that will illustrate the different gas laws. We will be given a list of equipment need to perform the experiment as well as general rules to help us do the experiment. We will investigate three properties of gases pressure, temperature, and volume. By doing this experiment we will be able to define the gas laws. According to Boyles, it states that a fixed amount of ideal gas that is kept at a fixed temperature, that the pressure and volume are inversely proportional, if the temperature stays unchanged. According to Charless Law, if the pressure of a gas is held constant, as the gas is heated, its volume will increase and that cooling the gas will cause the volume to decrease. Charles law describes that of the Gay- Lussacs law, who had actually referenced unpublished work of Charles. The law states that at a constant pressure, the volume of the given mass of the ideal gas will increase/ decrease, the same ways as the temperature will increase/ decrease. An easier way to interpret this is that at a constant pressure, volume and temperature are directly proportional. Materials Lab quest Vernier gas pressure sensor Temperature probe 20 mL gas syringe 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask 3 600mL beakers hot plate Dry ice rubber stopper with 2-way valve Procedure and observations (Part 1) The first thing we did in this experiment was measure pressure and volume. To do this we used the lab quest and syringe. You attach the syringe to the valve of the gas pressure sensor. We pick a volume and when reading the volume on the syringe make sure you read from the inside black ring on the piston of the syringe. Make sure to connect the gas pressure sensor to the Lab Quest and choose new from the file menu. Then you will set up the data collection, first change the collection mode to events with entry, then enter volume and units (mL) and select ok.     Hydraulic fracturing is a process within the mining and drilling industries used to increase the output of an underground fluid. Fracturing is used to access or augment productivity in petroleum, water and natural gas. The actual process is accomplished deep underground when a pressurized fluid is ejected from underground piping into the surrounding rock formations. The pressure of the fluid creates a crack in the rock which continues to expand as the pressure is applied. Solid additives in the pressurized fluid prevent the rupture from resealing once the pressure is alleviated. Sand and ceramics are commonly used as additives because their porous nature also allows the desired resource to travel to the piping. The increase in the size and number of underground networks due to the fracturing allows greater fluid output. In some instances the retrieval of an underground fluid would not be possible without the use of hydraulic fracturing. Shale reserves, located about 5,000 feet underground, suffer an exceptionally low permeability rate. Permeability is the measure of how well a fluid flows through a porous material. At that depth, and within such nonporous rock, the ability of fluids to travel to the well is greatly limited. Fracturing increases the area of the fluid that is exposed to porous materials and thus greatly increases production.
