Abraham Lincoln: Honest Abe
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States of America. He was looked at as one of the greatest presidents in history. He went through a great deal of obstacles to fight for what he believed in. The accomplishments he brought to our country would have been even greater if he wasn’t assassinated. As a child he knew that he was destined for greatness and he wanted to achieve more than what his family had. Lincoln was a brave and determined leader and personally one of my favorite presidents. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12th 1809 in a rural part of Kentucky. As a child he worked with his father on the farm. At nine years old Lincoln’s mother died and it was devastating for the soon to be president, at such a young age he had more responsibilities than most children. His father later married a widow, Sarah Johnston, with three of her own children. Lincoln began to enjoy her company and she also encouraged him to start reading, since she had more education than his birth parents, due to the fact that he only went to school for no less than a year. He eventually taught himself how to read and write. At 22 he decided to go on his own route in New Salem Illinois, where he had many jobs and was always encouraged to do more with his life everyday, more than he could ever imagine. He was always a very successful wrestler. In 1832, Lincoln enlisted to fight in the Black Hawk War. He saw no real action during his very short time in the military. Lincoln worked as a clerk before joining the military. He ran for the state legislature and lost in 1832. He was elected as a Whig to the Illinois legislature. He studied law and later passed the bar. In 1842 he married a woman named Mary Owens and they had four kids; Edward, Robert, William and Thomas.
