Abortion: Should It Be Illegal or Legal? Did you know according to studies from Right To Life, one out of three women in the US have an abortion by the time they turn 45? If you are going to be sexually active you should be prepared to have a baby or at least use some kind of birth control. In my opinion, there is no reason to have an abortion unless the mother or baby is in danger or in cases of rape or incest. Abortion is one of the most controversial topics talked about because pro-life advocates say abortion is murder, and pro-choice advocates disagree with that. Abortion will always be something that people disagree on depending on their beliefs (National Right To Lfe). Planned Parent Hood explains two different ways to abort a fetus; in-clinic abortion and the abortion pill. There are two in-clinic abortion types, aspiration or dilation and evacuation (D&E). Aspiration is used during the first 16 weeks of pregnancy and D&E is used after 16 weeks of pregnancy. An aspiration abortion is performed by inserting a tube through the women’s cervix into the uterus and then with either a hand-held suction instrument or a suction machine, the uterus is gently emptied. Sometimes after that is completed an instrument called a curette is used to remove any other tissue remaining in the uterus. D&E is basically the same thing as an aspiration abortion except the mother receives a shot in the abdomen area to make sure the fetus’s heart stops beating before performing the procedure. The abortion pill can only be used the first nine weeks of pregnancy. Taking the abortion pill blocks the hormone progesterone which makes the lining of the uterus break down and doesn’t let pregnancy continue. Three days after taking the abortion pill you take another pill called misoprostol which causes the uterus to empty and this usually causes cramps and heavy bleeding. More than half of women abort 4-5 hours after taking the second pill (Richards Cecile). Forty-seven of the 50

    Multiple studies provide solid affirmation that, after abortions, a disproportionate amount of women suffer from mental disabilities including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression. Psychologists Jesse Cougle, David Reardon, and Priscilla Coleman, in a 2003 study, compared women who, when pregnant for the first time, had a abortion, and those who birthed the child. The researchers found a sixty-five percent increase in depression risk for the women who aborted the fetus. (Cougle) This study is, however, only one piece of evidence for their claim. David Fergusson, a notable psychologist, in 2008 found that women who had a abortion were more likely to suffer from mental disorders. Fergusson estimates that post abortion mental illness acounts for 1.5 percent to 5.5 percent of all mental illness. (Fergesson) Many, including Theresa Burke, PhD, claim that many women suffer from a form of PTSD in the years following abortions.
