Abolish Teacher Tenure

Abolish Teacher Tenure Tenure might be good for the teachers, but it is horrible for the students. Tenure needs to be abolished from school and taken out of the contract. Teachers that have tenure do not teach well and often treat their students badly. Even though tenure is good for teachers and helps the teachers keep their jobs for life, so tenure must be eliminated from the teacher’s contract because many teachers become unmotivated, teachers that are not good at teaching can keep their jobs for life even if they do not teach or treat students well, and tenure hurts students by giving an unmotivated teacher the right to teach them. A teacher that has tenure may be unmotivated due to the fact that they do not have to do a good job and will still keep their job. “In any case the research shows that within five years, you can generally tell who is a good teacher and who is not (Thomas, Wingert, Conant, and Register).” Let’s say that a teacher gets tenured two years into the job and then the school realizes that they are not good teachers in about a two more years. Now that school is stuck because they cannot fire that teacher and hire a good teacher to replace him or her. That is a good thing for that teacher because him or her will have that job no matter what they do. “In New York City in 2008, three out of 30,000 tenured teachers were dismissed for cause (Thomas, Wingert, Conant, and Register).” This shows that teachers can get away with a lot and tenured teachers do not really even have to try to keep their jobs. That shows that teachers with tenure are not very motivated and will not do a good job in the classroom unlike teachers without tenure. Teachers without tenure actually have something to work for and can lose their job, where as 1 in 2500 tenured teachers get fired, so a tenured teacher is hard to motivate in the classroom (Waiting for Superman). Another problem is how bad some of these

    A New Deal for Teachers

The teacher quality of today is much weaker than what it has been in the past. In his article A New Deal For Teachers , Matthew Miller explains the demand for good teachers. He informs his readers that many teachers aren’t actually teaching because that was their desired profession, but because it was a last resort, so they don’t care as much for the students learning. Another issue of the teacher quality is salary. Miller explains that in the 1960s and 1970s school teachers were all very talented women but higher paying careers were not open to them. Now that those careers such as a doctor or a lawyer are open to anyone they are often taken over teaching because of the huge difference in salaries. The difference of a lawyer compared to teacher is around $2,000 starting out but topping out at around a difference of about $110,000. However some teachers who actually choose teaching as their top profession don’t mind the salary difference, they look at the greatness of the students to be fulfilling enough for them with the addition of free summers. An additional issue is that not many of these types of teachers are in the poorer and urban school districts. A shocking statistic was that half of the new teachers will actually quit within three years and they are usually the smarter teachers.…

    Teacher and Tenure

In 1855, the first National Education Association was established in the United States. In 1886, Massachusetts introduced Teacher Tenures. In 1909, New Jersey passed the first K-12 Tenure Law (Herbert 549). Has been developed throughout the history, teacher tenure has achieved innumerable beneficial and secured laws for teachers. Originated in ancient Greek, tenure is the protection and long-term employment for teachers from arbitrary dismissal, and it also allows teacher to focus on teaching without worrying of being fired (Herbert 549). However, in the recent dates, tenure’s value has been questioned due to many reasons. People who are against the system argue that tenure declines the teachers’ educational performances, and it is almost impossible to remove any poor performing teachers. Should teacher tenure be abolished? Although teacher tenure has been historically controversial, it should not be changed because it offers crucial, necessary protection from unreasonable dismissal and encourages instructors keeping the motivation in teaching.…

Tenure has “been called the holy grail of the teaching profession-academic freedom plus job security all rolled nicely into a union contract”(Stephey 1). Tenure evolved from the very “labor struggles during the late 19th century. Just as steel and auto workers fought against unsafe working conditions and unlivable wages, teachers too demanded protection from parents and…

    Teacher Tenure

Tenure was first adopted for professors in universities to prevent their dismissal based on political, personal, or other non-work related reasons. It was a protection against any form of dismissal which was unjustified and unfair. Currently tenure is available for K-12 grade level teachers and is granted after a couple of years of evaluation. Although this protection is granted to teachers of all grade levels tenure can potentially and does present problems with the dismissal of unqualified teachers. Tenure prevents teachers who are under performing from being fired as it is costly to the district to remove these teachers. Because of this negative effect schools nation wide are falling behind other elite schools in the world. Tenure is certainly not the only problem with public education, but it should be considered one of the greatest factors which contributes to the failure of public education. Once a teacher becomes tenured it is easy for that teacher to stop teaching at an adequate level and cause students to fall behind. Teachers union maintain that tenure provides protection for teachers yet it arguably causes teachers to simply stop caring as the process of firing them is nearly impossible and very costly. As a result many solutions have emerged in order to get rid of or better improve the process of teacher tenure. Three solutions which have been presented are reforming the tenure process by changing the amount of time it takes to fire a inadequate tenured teacher, renewable tenure contracts, and publicly recognizing and rewarding extraordinary teachers.…

    Tenure Argument

    • 10 Pages

Thousands of low-performing teachers in the American school system are being supported and encouraged by tenure. Tenure focuses on the welfare of the teachers, not the students. But that is backwards. Teaching should be about the students, not the individuals being paid to educate them. We are providing our educators with protection when we should be providing protection for the pupils. President Barack Obama said, “It's time to start rewarding good teachers, stop making excuses for bad ones... I reject a system that rewards failure and protects a person from its consequences.”[1] The system he rejects is our current system. If we're going to provide our children with the best education possible we need to stop teacher mediocrity.…

Every student across America has at least one memorable teacher. For Diane Ravitch, it was Mrs. Ratliff—literature loving, demanding, challenging, encouraging, and respectful. She was a teacher who did not produce the hard data that is demanded today. The data-driven education leaders are looking for assessment driven and union-disliking teachers who aren’t so worried about tenure. But why would teachers give unions and tenure up? Ravitch declares that teachers need their basic rights protected and states in her book, “That’s one important reason teachers joined unions: to protect their right to think, speak, and teach without fear” (174). Critics believe that unions are directly related to poor academic achievement, avoiding topics such as economy or communities that students come from. Along with this, they believe tenure should be given up. It is rewarded to teachers after a few years, and it is only given to those who respectively deserve it. The principal is the key factor in deciding this, so he or she should have prior experience in the teaching field to know what to look for. Of course, it is important that district officials and school boards should set up processes for both unions and tenure that are fair and thoughtful, allowing them to evaluate teachers in a more deliberative fashion too.…

    Arming Teachers

The issue at hand here is “Is There Support for Arming Teachers in Schools?” This issue is argued by both Nirvi Shah, and The National School Safety and Security Services organization. Nirvi Shah believes yes there is support for arming teachers in schools, while The National School Safety and Security Services organization believes no there isn’t. Shah believes yes because there are already teachers who are armed in some districts. Shah’s argument is basically that the law passed in Utah has caused school shootings to end in Utah. Shah interviewed Mr. Dorn, the Georgia school safety consultant and Mr. Dorn stated “Sandy Hook didn’t look anything like Columbine. Columbine didn’t look like Pearl, Miss.,” Shah states that “Ms. Sorenson, a 13-year teaching veteran, is among those bolstered by the fact that there haven’t been school shootings in Utah since the law changed.”…

Enthusiasm is contagious! Teachers who are enthusiastic and genuinely enjoy their job will typically see better academic results when compared to teachers who do not exhibit those characteristics. Every administrator should want a building full of happy teachers. It is critical that administrators recognize the value of keeping teacher morale high. They should have several strategies in place designed to boost teacher morale throughout the year. Unfortunately, teacher morale is on the decline across the United States. This is due to several factors including low pay, teacher bashing, over testing, and unruly students. The demands of the job are continuously changing and increasing. These factors along with others have forced…

Teachers are trusted with one of the most important jobs in America. Parents send their children to school so that they can receive a proper education and decide what they want to be in the future. Many teachers go above and beyond to help their students with school work, but there are some teachers who are there just to receive a check. These teachers should be eliminated from the school system by allowing students to evaluate them. Students should be allowed to grade their teachers because their teaching methods should be effective, because their attitudes affect students, and because the amount of time spent teaching is important.…

    Teachers Tenure

In most states, tenure statutes protect public school teachers from arbitrary dismissal. Most tenure statutes require teachers to remain employed for a certain amount of years. Therefore, once a teacher has attained tenure their contract renews automatically every year. When teachers in particular states exceed the years required, they could earn tenure automatically. Of course it all depends on the teacher’s school district guidelines. However, in other states the local school board must grant teachers their tenure. They often use the conclusion of a review based on the teacher's performance so determine if they are worthy. Prior to obtaining tenure, a teacher can be dismissed. Public and private schools are known to be very different and…

Mitchell’s first point outlines how getting rid of every single boring teacher is going to be a very difficult task, as he says, “Well, if my experience of school is anything to go by, she may have to root out half the profession”. Mitchell brings up a very valid point: in his opinion, he believes that half the teachers may have to be dismissed because of the routine activities used, such as writing out of…

    teacher tenure

Teacher tenure allows teachers to become better educators because without the anxiety and fear of losing employment, teachers can focus their efforts on providing the best education for students. The concern of being fired if the principal decides to observe you on a day when a lesson goes poorly or the students decide to act up causes a lot of anxiety for new teachers. With no idea when the principal or department supervisor might be popping in to watch your class, teachers working toward tenure often fall back on lessons that the know work at least moderately well rather than branching out and trying something new. By giving qualified educators the knowledge that their job is secure as long as they continue to do it well, it removes that anxiety and allows them to focus on providing excellent educational experiences for their students.…
