Abigail in "The Crucible"
Abigail Williams is an important character from the drama The Crucible written by Arthur Miller. The story The Crucible is about how witchcraft becomes such a problem in Salem. John Proctor, the main character, have an affair with Abigail Williams, while being married to Elizabeth Proctor. Being the mayor´s niece, gives Abigail an advantage and she starts using witchcraft in order to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor. After analyzing the character of Abigail Williams, it is evident that she is dishonest, manipulative, and vengeful. Through out the drama Abigail demonstrates how dishonest she is. Since the beginning of the play, Abigail lies about everything, so things will turn out her way. At the beginning of the story, her uncle, Reverend Parris, catches Abigail with a group of girls dancing naked in the forest trying to do witchcraft. When her uncle questions her behavior she lie about everything and say, "they were dancing and never conjured spirits". Later on in the story, she admits that Tituba and Ruth do conjures the spirits (every time she figures out a way to change the story for her to stay out of trouble, not mattering what harm she can cause to others). In the story Abigail´s main goal is to get John Proctor´s wife, Elizabeth, in trouble. Abigail desires John Proctor, but having Elizabeth as his wife really bothers her. One of many ways that she tries to complete her goal of ruining Elizabeth´s life is by stabbing herself with a needle and saying that it got there by a "voodoo poppet" that Mary (one of Abigail´s friends) gave to Elizabeth. Later on, Cheever finds the doll and says, "Abigail were stabbed tonight, a needle were found into her belly.” When someone tries to testify against her, she starts pretending as if they are committing witchcraft against her. Abigail´s lies are causing a lot of harm to many people and even death to several important characters in the play. She is an immature girl that only cares for herself, her desires, and nothing
