Imaginary Realism The idea of Imaginary realism is something that can be placed in stories to elaborate and make the story more complex. For the short story “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, he uses the characters in the story to show the different impacts found in a society such as religion and humanity. For the story “My Life with the Wave” by Ovtavio Paz uses the wave not only as a symbol but also as a character in order to show the importance of a woman. Both of the author’s stories show examples of imaginary realism and the many impacts it can have which also make these stories very suspenseful and interesting. “When I left that sea, a wave moved ahead of others. She was tall and light” (Paz 349).The characteristics that the wave represents for a women show that the wave can be unpredictable and calm. The author shows this by demonstrating and showing the unpredictability and the different reactions that the women and the wave share. “She cried, screamed, hugged, threatened, I had to apologize” (Paz 349). The passage shows that transformation that water itself can become and it also shows the quick changes that women can make. Just like a women cry’s the liquid in water evaporates and becomes rain. When a woman screams, the rain which came from the wave creates thunder, and when a woman threatens, the wave is a force with the potential to take a life. Water itself is one of the most important key elements to the essence of life. Water is one of many elements that have the potential to take of different forms. Water itself can be in the form of a liquid, gas, or solid. For water the three forms construct a cycle, which also represents renewal, life and death. “A wave moved…in the sprite of the shouts of the others who grabbed her by her floating clothes, she clutched my arm and went off with me leaping” (Paz 349). The use of clothes exemplifies the wave as a living substance. After the main character arrives home from having being put in jail, He questions the wave on how she got home after the incident that happens on the train. “Someone, after making sure that I was only water, poured me in the engine….I was a white plume of vapor.” (Paz 130). Water becoming vapor shows the death of how the wave dies. Another example of death is where the wave turns into ice. “There in the mountains …I found a statue of ice….I sold her to a waiter friend who immediately began to chop her into little pieces…” (Paz 352). But for this example of how the water transforms also the statement also shows murderer to the wave. But unlike the previous death the wave will eventually start over as a liquid once again.
