Humanity Two things that A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings and What We Talk About When We Talk About Love have in common is ways that humans perceive what is happening around them. A theme for A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings is how human nature treats differences and those that are strange. A theme for What We Talk About When We Talk About Love is how everyone perceives and defines love differently. The authors of both stories use their tools to convey their themes. Gabriel García Márquez, the author of A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings, mainly conveys his theme through his characters. The main two characters that show the darkness in human nature are Pelayo and his wife, Elisenda. They come across the old man in their yard, take care of him until their son heals, and then lock him up in a chicken coop for their own personal

They show the individual personalities and thoughts of their characters to show how they think of the world around them. Their characters have more of an impact on their stories than their setting seems to because the characters help the readers to connect to the story. Each author also uses the characters to further the plot as each one speaks or makes a decision that changes the course of the story altogether (ex. When Elisenda decides to lock the Old Man up in the chicken coop to charge people to look at him). Although there are a lot of tools that the authors used within the story, the characters furthered the plot the most and conveyed their themes the easiest. Works Cited
