What the bad people do to him, Sohrab thinks he is full of sin and people would make fun of him. He is so hurt that he hates himself; he has become a living statute. By this much pain and suffering one goes through, they will hope for a better, time, life and a better zindagi.
Pain and suffering happens to both of the characters in A Thousand Splendid Suns. Mariam was a Harami (bastard) child, even though she did not know the meaning of the word Harami, but she is hoping to go to her dads house and live with him, her sisters, brothers, and would have a happy life. When Mariam goes to her dads house the outcome is unpleasant:
