A Streetcar Named Desire Monologue Analysis
[Stella is on her own in a room in Eunice’s flat. There is a neatly made bed with white sheets in the middle of the room, in which Stella is sitting down, sipping from a glass of water. The door to the room was previously closed and locked by Stella, claiming she was going to change clothes and needed privacy. There is an open window on the right side of the bed, facing a building which lights are all off. Stanley’s and Eunice’s voices can be recognized above the background screams heard]
Stella: [yelling] I told him to get away from me. I told him not to lay his hands on me. That- that animal! That drunk animal! Tossing a radio out of the window! Violent, that’s what he is. A violent animal. These poker nights turn men into drunkards, into

Stella, sweetheart! Stella!´. She stops walking and stays standing up where she is, far enough from the window for her figure to not be able to be seen by Stanley. Stella speaks calmly now]. His…baby doll? His… sweetheart? Am I, still? He hit me… why is he being so nice now? Is it- Is it my fault, maybe? Maybe I shouldn’t have let Blanche turn on the radio, maybe we shouldn’t have even been there. Maybe they’re right, and women shouldn’t be around when men play poker… No. No, I won’t let it be my fault. It is not my fault. Not mine nor Blanche’s, and definitely not this baby’s, so why should we suffer the consequences for his violent way of being? [Eunice’s and Stanley’s voices are heard arguing. Stanley’s voice is heard saying ‘Eunice, I want my girl to come down with me!’ The door to Eunice’s apartment is heard being slammed shut. Stanley’s voice yells ‘STELLL-AHHHHH!’ Stella walks towards the bed and sits down.] He sounds disturbed…he seems to regret what he did, doesn’t he? Maybe I exaggerated, right? I know how he is. I know how he acts. I knew he had trouble controlling himself when I married him, and I sure know it now. It was just…just an episode. He didn’t want to do it, I can hear that in his voice-

I believe the primary theme of A Streetcar Named Desire is madness as the result of a disconnect between idealism and reality. The main character of the play, Blanche DuBois, refuses to face reality, keeping her past mistakes and losses hidden from those around her by hiding in the shadows of madness and deception. She wishes nothing more than to escape from who she is, avoiding the interrogation lamp of life at all costs to conceal her depressing past and frightening present. In doing so, she falls more and more away from what was genuine as she wanted to live in a world of magic where none existed, forcing her into a pit of insanity and depression as her past finally catches up with her. A significant rhetorical strategy employed by Tennessee…

Characterizing – it is a daily occurrence that many do not realize is taking place. Whether it appears by describing someone’s new hair or explaining a person’s personality, characterization is frequently happening. Yet, representation of an individual does not only take place in the real world, it appears in numerous literary works as well. For example, in the written matters of A Streetcar Named Desire, A Separate Peace, and “Everyday Use”, where character interactions, such as arguing and having conflicting beliefs, bring out strong depictions and central messages. While some readers of these pieces of literature may believe that character interaction shows no relation to theme relativity; a closer inquiry demonstrates that through characters such as Stella and Stanley, Mama and Dee, and Gene and Finny, an…

Williams’ use of diction when he says, “The damned little brat must be protected against her own idiocy, one says to one's self at such times. Others must be protected against her. It is a social necessity.” shows how he views kids. He is saying to readers children do not know any better and because we are older we are expected to protect and guide them in order for society to function properly. He realizes how oblivious this was to him before and how much pint up aggression he had towards this matter. It showed in the forced he used on the girl. He continues by saying “In a final unreasoning assault I overpowered the child's neck and jaws. I forced the heavy silver spoon back of her teeth and down her throat till she gagged. And there it was--both tonsils covered with membrane. She had fought valiantly to keep me from knowing her secret. She had been hiding that sore throat for three days at…

The main character in a drama entitled "Street Car Named Desire", written by Tennessee Williams, is an emotional woman by the name of Blanche, who has many afflictions. The setting of this play is in the state of Louisiana. Blanche has the potential to be a very vigorous woman, if she chooses to tap into that unidentified strength. All her life, she’s managed to face scrutiny from every possible direction. She has been ostracized from her community, lied to throughout her entire marriage, lost her inheritance, battling with alcoholism, and invests her fate and well-being in men. Stella “couldn’t believe her story and [she continues] on living with Stanley” (133). Blanche tries to inform her sister how Stanley is not the man she thinks he is, and how she is living in a fantasy. Stella chooses to believe Stanley, which demonstrates how she is living a lie. Stella does not agree with the accusations that were made. Stanley is abusive to Stella, yet she proceeds to say “I am not in anything that I have a desire to get out of” (65). Stanley shows instability throughout the play, especially after the arrival of Stella’s sister, Blanche. Stanley does not allow his anger to take over him at first, but after many months of what he sees as disrespect from his sister-in-law and eventually from his wife he completely breaks down. The first scene of instability shown in the play is at the poker game where when Stella tries to act as head of the house and attempts to break up the poker game. Stanley jumps up and charges after her and slaps her. Another example of Stanley being pushed from sanity is in scene eight when he says, “What do you two think you are? A pair of queens? Remember what Huey Long said- “Every Man is a King!”And I am the king around here, so don’t forget it!” (Williams 131).…

Susan Koprince talked about the issues of domestic abuse in America. In the 1940’s, when the book was written, being submissive and tolerant towards your husband is what a wife was expected to do. Issues of domestic abuse were expected to be dealt with in a household without the interference of the authorities, since it was believed to be a woman’s fault. This is perhaps why in A Street Car Named Desire Stella’s role is submissive. We see this when in reply to Blanche’s concern regarding Stanley’s behaviour Stella says “But there are things that happen between a man and woman in the dark”. Here Stella suggests that she almost can justify Stanley’s actions towards her. To agree with Helen Deutsch’s interpretation of women being masochists, Stella may be ‘thrilled’ by Stanley’s behaviour like she was on her wedding night where Stanley smashed the lights with his slipper.…

Eunice’s relationship with her husband Steve is extremely similar to Eunice and Stanley’s relationship. Actually the two relationships are almost identical. Just like Stella, Eunice is also physically beaten by her husband. In scene five there seems to be some ruckus taking place up in Eunice’s flat and you soon hear Eunice scream at Steve “You hit me! I’m gonna call the police!” (Williams 86). But in Stella’s flat her and Blanche are able to giggle about the fight because they know that their relationship will go on and be okay regardless of the fight. Eunice quickly gets over the fight and turns to alcohol to forget about it and Stella refers to this as “much more practical!” (Williams 87). The fact the Eunice is able to get over the fight so quickly portrays hope for Stella. If Eunice is able to get over fights so quickly obviously it is possible for Stella to get over fights with Stanley hence the laughter. Similar to Eunice being abused, so is Stella in scene three. Stanley and his friends are playing poker and drunkenly “Stella charges after Stella” (Williams 63) and it is presumed she is physically attacked and she then goes on to say “I want to go away, I want to go away” (Williams 63) and she then storms up to Eunice’s flat where she is very welcoming and tries to keep Stella calm. Eunice once again shows her kind-heartedness when she defends Stella yells at Stanley “You can’t beat on…
