A Rhetorical Analysis Of Same Love
Song Title: Same Love
Artist: Macklemore and Ryan Lewis ft Mary Lambert.
Director: Ryan Lewis and Jon Jon Augustavo
The songs message is about the issue of gay and lesbian rights and was recorded during the campaign for Washington Referendum which was approved in 2012, attempting to legalize same-sex marriage. The song ´Same Love´ was inspired by Mary Lambert's experiences with love and growing up homosexual in a religious family.

Aspect one: Cutting in the videos of protesters protesting for gay rights to be legalized, we see police officers loitering around the edges of the people, bombs going off and Christian crosses on fire. These scenes reflect that homosexuals were not accepted and people had to protest to try to be allowed to

In the club/party when he looks lost and feels like he is unwanted and not accepted at the event because he is not dancing with girls. The main Man in the hospital bed, with his husband at his side shows us that they stuck together until the end despite the public's view on their relationship. The scenes of the two men at the hospital between 5 minutes and 5 minutes and 23 seconds shows us that even though gay rights was not accepted in society, the two boys did not give up on their love for eachother and did not let what society thought of their love ruin them. The scene shows us that the main character in the video is extremely lost and down about his feelings at the beginning of the video, however he knew what he wanted and gradually began care less about what others thought because he was happy with where he was at in his life. it shows us that both the men were extremely strong for themselves and each other even through the hard times and it allowed us to see that everyone has the right to love who they want to love no matter how others feel about it. Everyone is equal and deserves to be happy and treated the same, whether they want a gay marriage or a straight marriage and no matter how other people feel about your relationship, if you are both happy you should stick to it and not let other people put you, or your partner down for your decisions. Personally, i feel that the meaning of these lyrics is that although everyone have rites now, we do not have freedom until gay marriage is accepted and legalized in society. These lyrics show how much society looks down and writes rude and unneccesary comments about gay relationships and marriage unintentionally at times, and that it is now a habit for society to bring down gay rights through speech unintentionally in our everyday conversations. People not thinking that “man thats gay” is going to have an impact on homosexuals and how they feel about themselves. These lyrics show people who are not homosexual, that they do not think about how their speech effects others and/or do not care about how homosexuals feel when ‘gay’ is used as a figure of speech. This scene relates to the rest of the music video because it shows that gay rights are not looked at seriously and not only do poeple actions show how they feel about gay rights, but it also shows through their speech. These lyrics were in some way inspiring and in other very eye opening because it really made me think about how much the word 'gay' is used in peoples day to day speech while criticizing someone/something. It made me personally think twice about what i say and in what context i use the word 'gay' during my

At first glance the song seems to be written about two people, their broken relationship, and eventual reconciliation. This may hold true with what the artist was trying to convey. The Avett Brothers write primarily about what they know, about relationships, and life experience. The personification of “Love” may be modeled after a woman, possibly one of these young men’s wives, who displayed unconditional love. The vacation in the first verse may refer to a time of separation, where “Hate” grew bitter, yet eventually realized his error, and was won over by the gentle ways of “Love.” “Hate’s” unruly and reckless behavior may have been modeled after one of these young men’s actions. I find the verse about the cab driver very interesting. Do Seth and Scott…

There are visual appeals in this video as the main characters life is shown in clips as he grows up. One clip shows him playing football with his father, another clip shows him playing spin the bottle, and fighting with his mom as a teenager. Macklemore uses these clips to show how this man is the same as every other teenager, despite being gay. The video goes on to show the man all grown up, working a job in his own office and having a boyfriend. These clips show that this man is just a regular man and that if the boyfriend wasn’t shown; no one would know the difference. Macklemore also expresses his feelings about religious and politics views toward gay marriage through visual techniques and powerful lyrics. “The right-wing conservatives think it’s a decision and that you can be cured with some treatment and religion”(Same Love). Gay marriage is a common battle between people that will probably never end. Some say that it is a decision to be gay; some say people are born with it. As Macklemore says, some people still consider it a disease and that it can be cured with religion or therapy. He challenges other’s religious and political views by giving his opinion about how they are wrong about being gay being a decision. Macklemore adds short video clips all the way through the music video of past historical controversies. He uses African American rights videos, women wearing illegal bathing suits,…

“Modern Love.” The term brings to mind the changing dynamic of today's society. This change has been present for decades and continues on to this day. In George Meredith's poem he illiterates the negative impact of this change in a case that could encompass so many couples; the pain of a loveless marriage. Through his use of diction, and metaphor Meredith show the pain and heartache of two people being so close, yet so emotionally distant.…

Thanks to those people feeling accepted they were able to start many organizations and start the fight for LGBT rights. Martin Boyce is a great example of someone who participated in the Stonewall Riots. A few months after the riots he went back to Hunter College in New York and decided that all the term papers he wrote would be gay. After college Martin Boyce moved back home to take care of his ill parents. While living at home Martin Boyce was working in restaurants to make ends meet. After his parents passed away he opened up his own restaurant called “Everybody’s Restaurant” where everyone was welcome. He and his business partner had come up with a slogan for brunch that said "We treat our customers like kings because the owners are a bunch of queens." If Boyce did not take part in the riots he might have never opened his restaurant. His restaurant brought everybody together and it was full of all love and no…

Hello Thinh! After reading your rhetorical essay, I agree what you said "media embrace the gender inequality and the idealism of a female body." People always see that the photos woman always appeared in movies, TV, magazines, who are in good shape, attractive and charming. It lowers the value of the women because people just appreciate their body and not appreciate their intellectuals. According to what you said "showing researched evidence (ethos), personal interview (pathos) and statistic (logos)", I can understand the purpose of the director that the film is more credibility and persuaded to the audience by using logos, pathos, and ethos. Overall, your essay is well organized, and it provides different sources as well as analyze what you…

According to the History Channel in 1969, the Stonewall Inn (a gay club) was raided by police for the illegal distribution of alcohol. At first the crowd on the street watched quietly as the employees were arrested, but as three drag queens and a lesbian were put into a paddy wagon the onlookers started hurling bottles at the police. The policemen had to take cover in the building until reinforcements came. Soon the crowd was broken up, but they continued to protest in New York for the next several days(The Stonewall Riots). The situation had spiraled out of control because of New York prohibiting homosexuality in public. After the raiding of most of the gay establishments in New York, Stonewall was the last straw in the LGBTQ community and led to discussions about civil rights, advocacy groups, and many more things(The Leadership Conference). Much like the raiding of Stonewall, many occasions that affected the history of the LGBTQ spectrum had some sort of deeper meaning behind…

The author basically says that love can be described in different ways, depending on the person's mood at that point in time. In paragraph 3, the author states "even murder is forgivable if it was "a crime of passion."" The piece of evidence that was stated means love can be a very descriptive word. Love can also have different reasoning and/or meaning. Love can be so strong that even countries think that it's okay to commit a murder because the person was "so in love". Quotes were put on so in love because sometimes people don't even be in love with one another. The author's statement is very agreeable because the fact that love can have different meanings, shows and determines how love can affect a person's emotions and…

Also with both of the videos they protest to people how they should not be persuaded by either of these groups and to not follow their political agenda. Finally, by comparing the LGBTQ community and Target to Sodom and Gomorrah it further pushes this belief that these groups are “evil”. Sodom and Gomorrah in the bible was a city defined as sinful and wicked so much it had to be destroyed. Based off of these aspects I believe it clearly defines the demonization of both of these…

In the second verse, the writer talks about being a faggot, and how he’s not part of the redneck agenda. This can be seen in two different perspectives. The first perspective of this can be seen as the writer being rebellious and saying that he doesn’t believe in the typical rednecks way of thinking that homosexuality is not okay. The other perspective can be seen as that he’s being a dissent and doesn’t want war to happen, so he’s considering himself as a “faggot” rather than being a typical redneck that often enjoys violence. On this verse, the writer talks about people easily being convinced by propaganda, which is causing paranoia.…

Famous celebrities, such as Macklemore, recently released a song titled, “Same Love”, and it speaks on the ignorance people have towards same sex marriages, and advocates for equal rights for everyone. Although advocacy attempts have been made in support of homosexuals to promote equality, very rarely do you see advocacy attempts made by people of power, or celebrities. This is probably due to the fact that they don’t wish to offend their fan base, or be looked upon poorly. Macklemore explicitly stating that he promotes same sex marriage, and equal rights for everyone on a national level was monumental. When Macklemore saw his tours, he admits that he was fretful in attending a few of the locations, such as: Texas, Montana, and Idaho. "Those were three places where people probably sang the loudest and it gives me some hope in the power of music and what music can do," said the MC, whose given name is Ben Haggerty. When hearing people 's testimonials about 'Same Love ' “changing the way that they feel about gay people or the language that they use in their everyday life, making them consider changing that language, or changing their hateful perspective on another group of people, it 's exciting to see that music has that capability. It just affirms what you already believe, but to see it on a tangible level in these cities has been one of the greatest gifts of my career”(Talbott, 2012)." Said Macklemore. Haggerty thinks the song 's cultural impact shows how much the notoriously homophobic hip-hop world has changed in recent years. Socially, on a national level, prejudices against homosexuals still exist. However impactful Macklemore’s attempt was in stating his beliefs on the matter, and his huge fan base, people still have hateful beliefs towards homosexuals. Macklemore ahs begun the revolution to making hip hop music more culturally diverse and…

For me this is no song that made an impact on me and my gender roles. However there are songs out there that I realise what they’ve done. The “Stereotype song” is one of those videos. “I love the Middle East, but how do they handle rockin’ burkas while they’re riding camels.” While the lyrics aren’t offensive, then people start making assumptions of the people who live there. They start to think everyone there wears burkas, and that everyone rides camels. People then start rumors on just assumptions and not…

These people, who are no different from you or I, were treated like barbaric, mental criminals, like diseases of society. They were looked down upon as if they were lesser than any other heterosexual. They had to pretend to be something they weren’t to be able to live, but in the end, they weren’t living at all. It’s hard to say why exactly the crowd choice to stay and stand up for themselves at Stonewall after so long, but like every heroic act, it sparked a…

In today’s society, equality has been achieved for most, and very few pockets of prejudice still exist. However, these pockets are not like those that existed in the early 1900s. Frequently, racism is displayed from African American individuals towards the “privileged” caucasian population. Similar movements pertaining to the rights of the LGBT community have began to protest the right to free speech. Modern activism has seen a major shift from what it once stood for. In the past, activists stood to increase the rights belonging to their own group. Now, protests seek to remove the rights of others in order to defend the opinions of the protestor.…

His argument begins with, “What if this was a gay world, and you were straight?” This gives the reader an idea from their own perspective on how it would be if he or she was in that predicament. He states in his first argument that the legalization of gay marriage will establish equality for all. I completely agree because the gay society is very much discriminated today. They don’t have the rights he or she wants to receive.…
