A Rhetorical Analysis Of 'Campus Climate Control' By Katie Roiphe
Summary: This essay is an analytical paper, discussing the literary devices used by Katie Roiphe in an article discussing whether college campuses should have adults to supervise the students while they are in this period of their lives where they are not quite adults yet but have earned their rule to some freedoms. She makes the essay more of a personal one by putting her own life story in it as well. Roiphe states facts from not just the side of the augment which she believes to be right, but facts from many different perspectives and even brings forward numerous ideas she believes would be sufficient solutions to the problem.

In this paragraph she reveals having all this freedom did scare her and other students of her generation. This gives the readers a point in the essay they can visibly see where the change occurs. She starts it with, “But it wasn't making us as happy as it was supposed to,” (Roiphe, 1999). Roiphe inserts this paragraph to show it was not all positive to have all the freedom from adults in college life. Those who grew up in the 60’s were working so tirelessly for all of this freedom and now when the proceeding generations received all of this freedom, it became too much for them to handle and it became somewhat chaotic. They were lost with what to do with all the freedom they inherited and it started to intimidate them a little and made them feel out of place in the environment around surrounding them. In this same short paragraph she goes back to the stories, “I remember moments of exultation walking through the pink campus at dawn, but I also remember moments of pure terror,” (Roiphe, 1999). The story tells about how she has had some nice, beautiful mornings; however, pints out there were times of absolute horror. This is Roiphe presents to the readers that there is a negative side of all this freedom and did not always make her feel joyful. This statement goes with Sinkka’s when he said …show more content…
To better comprehend the statement, the reader must first understand what loco parentis means; this means in place of a parent. After knowing this information the reader can now understand the students of today’s generations are wanting a parent figure in their lives while attending university. She mentions the administrators of the institutions now are the same individuals who grew up in the 60’s rebelling for more freedom and are confused as to why the students want parent figures on campuses. Throughout the remainder of the essay, Roiphe discusses both sides of the argument of whether to instill a parent like figure on the college campuses or to continue to have them free. “Alcohol-free, adult-supervised student centers? Students will mock them. But they may serve a function by their mere existence,” (Roiphe, 1999). The theory presented here by Roiphe is explaining there is a reason students get scared when they are left on their own, to act on their own free will. College students want to be rebellious, this is a time in their lives when they can break the rules a bit and have their fun without getting into serious trouble that will be awaiting them in live after college; having a parent like figure on campus will give them the institution to rebel against and not be complete anarchy.
