A & P, By John Updike
Lewis Carroll once said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.” This quote describes what adventure means to me because if you do not have a plan, then you automatically have more freedom to do anything you would like to do than you would if you already have your life planned. If you are in college, you have less freedom to have adventures due to the time you need to complete school work. However, you could still have adventures on the weekends or breaks. If you do not have anything taking up your time, you can have even more adventures. Adventure is something unplanned, exciting, and a little bit scary. Adventure is seeing something new or trying something for the first time. Some people reject their call to adventure …show more content…
Sadie from “Sadie and Maud,” has an adventure by having two kids when she is not married. While Maud from “Sadie and Maud,” does not have an adventure because she was afraid of the unknown. Sammy from “A & P,” works to help pay the bills and does the same boring thing every day. When he finally works up the courage to say yes to adventure, he quits his job. I relate to Sadie and Sammy because I also want adventure. I also relate to Maud because I am afraid of the unknown. I like to plan what is going to happen next. Despite being afraid of the unknown, I decided to apply to be a travel nanny in the summer for a family in Utah. I will get to travel to a lot of new places while watching little kids. The only problem is I am nervous to be away from home for the whole summer. But I think it will be a great adventure and I will knock a lot of places off of my bucket list. You will regret saying no to adventure more than you would if you said yes to adventure because if you say no you will miss out on great …show more content…
Since Maud from “Sadie and Maud” did not take any risks, consequently she did not have an adventurous life. Even though Maud followed the rules, she ended up alone and unhappy in the end. Meanwhile, Sadie from “Sadie and Maud” did take some risks and had an adventurous life. Although Sadie was not married, she had two kids. This embarrassed her parents as well as Maud. Sammy from “A & P” took a risk and quit his job. Now Sammy does not have a plan, so he is free to do whatever he chooses to do. I took a chance and applied for a job as a travel nanny. I learned that if I do not take a chance on adventure, I will not have adventure. You get to decide whether or not you want to have an adventure. If you are too scared you probably will not have an adventure. Are you too scared of the unknown? What will your adventure be? It is up to you, no one

    Sadie and Maud are two sisters that lead two completely different lives. Maud went to college while Sadie did not and stayed at home. Then, Sadie had two children out of wedlock and her family almost dies of shame. Towards the end of the poem, Maud, who went to college, is compared to a thin, starving, and lonely brown mouse. This is shown in the poem when the author states “Is a thin brown mouse / living all alone / in this old house,” (Brooks 18-20). Sadie lived life contently as a result of her children growing up. This is shown in the poem when it states “when Sadie said her last so-long / her girls struck out from home. / (Sadie left as heritage / her fine-toothed comb.)” (Brooks 13-16). Basically, Sadie dies at a young age, her children grow up, move out from home, and the only item left is her fine-toothed comb as heritage for her children. This shows that Sadie lived her life to the fullest potential, even prior to having children. Starting at the beginning of the poem, it described her as “livingest chits / in all the land” (Brooks 7-8). At the beginning of the poem, it seems as though Maud would be the happy, wealthy, and successful sister, and Sadie would be the unhappy, poor, and unsuccessful sister.     Updike 's “A&P” is an interesting story of attitude and the male ego. Sammy, being young and obviously very observant, describes in first person point of view the events that lead up to him quitting his job. The theme of “A&P” is central to the idealistic and moral values of young verses old. As represented in the difference of attitude towards the girls regarding the wearing of swim suits in the local grocery store. While the girls are strolling through the various aisles, Sammy is enthralled with the appearance with one girl more than the other two. He apparently does not have an issue with the attire of the girls. Moreover, he is better inclined to allow his hormones to control the situation. This is evident by the way Sammy describes the three girls, each one with a unique style and flare. An example of this would be the way in paragraph 1 and 4 where he refers to the backside of one of the girls as a “can”. A contrast to that description would be the way he describes Queenie. Immediately noticing that the straps of her suit were down tells the reader that in Sammy 's mind the girls were objects of fixation and mere physical gratification. The second paragraph shows this very well when Sammy compares the minds of girls to a buzz like a bee in a glass jar.
