No Comprendo

For me, learning to read and write was quite an adventure. It started where most children begin—the infamous realm of kindergarten. Now you have to understand that prior to this I had never spoken English before. So as a five year old little Hispanic girl, I was faced with quite a predicament—learning to read and write in a language I could not speak or understand.
I still remember my first day of school. I remember approaching the classroom which was filled with chattering and laughter. I remember my teacher trying to communicate with me. As I tried to recall the English I heard in my cartoons and Disney movies, I understood only about forty percent of what she said. I was excited to begin this new experience of school, but wasn't quite sure how to deal with it all. It

I found it impossible to make the sounds my teacher indicated went along with a certain letter. Although, I was very much entertained by the faces she made while over-enunciating for my benefit. Also, the concept of a silent letter just wasn't clicking in my head. If a letter was silent, why did they bother putting it in the word in the first place? I found some hope when vowels and consonants were introduced and was excited that I could remember the difference between them. Sadly, my excitement did not last long, for soon after that we learned the "special sounds". You know? That little chart you went over every morning? I became so annoyed by the repetitive "ck" is for duck, "pl" is for plane, "fr" is for frog. To make matters worse, the charts began to get more and more difficult. After much practice, however, I tackled most of these sounds, some even without the thick accent. This was a big accomplishment for me because after this I could begin to do what I had always wanted. I could begin to

I am not a professional reader, nor am I a professional writer. As a matter of fact, I don’t like writing at all, but then writing is a part of life. I was only 6 years old when I started to take an interest in reading and also started to learn how to read. My grandmother was a greater reader. She would read to me all the time and encourage me to read anything I could get my hands on. I would always see her with a book during her spare time.…

Rodriguez describes his journey of language through the influence of his grandmother, the battles of balancing both the native language and the English language and by his disagreement of “individuality”. Rodriguez designates his passage by describing the struggles he endured as a bilingual Hispanic in American society. Born as an American citizen to Mexican immigrants, Rodriguez was the child of working-class parents. He started going to a Roman Catholic School following the footsteps of his older sister and brother. However, by attending this school, he felt misplaced; his classmates were all children of high-class lawyers and doctors. Living in Sacramento, California, Rodriguez realized that his life would entirely change, for better and worse.…

Most people rely on the security and care of others to provide for their loved ones when they put them in a nursing home. What they don’t realize is how much neglect goes on to the people they care most about. Residents are at risk of being abused by their caretakers but they are also at risk of being restrained, which may lead to a form of abuse. At Southwestern Nursing Home I have witnessed forms of neglect and abuse. Nursing homes are meant to be a place for security for the elderly to be cared for in their golden years, and it has become an unpleasant experience for senior citizens being subjected to acts of abuse and neglect.…

For me, learning to read and write was long and felt like a drag to me; I took reading and writing for granted and never thought of the great advantages that every book had. It all started at home when I was five years old and my mom was teaching me how to write my name. In my head, I had trouble understanding on what I wrote but as far as I know that was my name. Finally the day came and it was time for me to go to school. I was scared; I did not know where I was, and I did not know a single word in English. There was no way my mom would stick me in an English classroom. They moved me to a Spanish one; there I had a more clear idea of what I was learning. The teacher was a sweet, calm lady; she had patience with bad writing, to this day I have not figured out whether she understood it or not. Once I learned my ABC’s here came the small words of animals and things like for example “oso” which means bear in Spanish. Learning to read and write seamed so boring. I had to sit down and do homework which required my attention, but I preferred to draw and play. Learning was torture; I would read very slowly, even when I tried to read those small picture books for small kids, I was useless by that time.…

I learned how to read at a very early age of five. Not only did I know how to read in English but I also learned how to read in Spanish. For kindergarten I went to an imersion program which taught me both English and Spanis. My parents were very suprised I was able to read in both languages since I wasnt fluent at the time. I had no idea it was such ancawesome accomplishment until later on. I am really thankful for the teacher I had Señora Carmona. She was the one who really developed my reading skills and I am very thankful for tha. At five years old you dont know how smart you are until you look back amd you're like Wowwww! I was able to do that. For some people it is still hard to read in their first language let alone in another. One day Señora Carmona called my parents in for a parent teacher conference. At the time my parents were a little worried that I had gotten in trouble. When my parents went into class my Dad and Señora Carmona realized they went to high school together so it broke the ice a little. They spent a little time catching up and then she began to talk about me.she told them how amazed she was on how I was doing compared to the rest of the kids in the class. My parents were so proud of me. They couldnt believe I was reading better than both the American kids in English and the hispanic kids in Spanish. As parents they felt a sense of accomplishment. I look back and I really appreciate what I had learned back then because it has helped me out in so many ways. I will never forget Señora Carmona and if I saw her today I would thank her for all she had taught me.…

The first books I ever started reading were Winnie the Pooh and Dr Suess books. When I was young my parents were really good about getting me started with reading different books and for a long time I loved reading, as long as it was books I got to choose and enjoyed reading myself. Once I got further along in school and they started mandating what books we had to read I got to the point where I didn’t find reading enjoyable any longer. I didn’t like most of the books my teachers were picking for us to read so I felt like I had to force myself to read them and it caused me to even stop reading books outside of school…

I realized then, that I had a lot of work to do. I remember feeling overwhelmed with the idea of having to learn a new language. I was placed in a classroom along with other students who were in the same situation I was in, and we were taught the alphabet in English. If I remember correctly, it took me almost two years to completely learn English. But…

In my experience with Writing II, being able to get extra help in perfecting my writing skills was beneficial and helped me understand composition 1. Also being in a small class environment was useful for talking to other classmates and with getting help; which also helped me stay focused on my writings. By going over Critical Reviews before Composition 1, it helped tremendously by preparing me for my next class. Going to seminars and workshops was interesting, entertaining and was also awarding with all the information I had received out of them. I was nervous going into Writing II and Composition 1 at the same time but it ended up being easier than I had expected. Although I was surprised at how little work there was for Writing II, I feel…

My adventure in learning to read began with my parents. When I was younger getting ready for bed was a treat, I would brush my deciduous teeth, put on my Spongebob pajama pants, and give my parents enough kisses to persuade them to read me a bedtime story. But the best part came when I was able to climb into my cushioned cotton covers and imagine handsome princes slaying dragons, evil witches cackling with delight, or what it would be like to hear an itsy bitsy spider climb up a water spout. It wasn't the pictures I was interested in, it was the words. I was amazed at how letters formed words, words formed sentences, and sentences created fantasy. I would follow along connecting the sound of my parents voice to the words I saw, stopping every chance I could to ask what some of the words meant. This is how learning to read transfigured into learning to love reading.…

After a few minutes, the woman turned toward me with a glowing smile, to whom I did not realize then that I would grow accustom.…

As my mom drove her car to school, she spoke encouraging words to me. As soon as we arrived at school, my hands felt clammy. My mind raced so much that I could not think about anything else but how school would be like. I slowly walked toward the two massive school doors squeezing my mother's hand. My body screamed inside as I entered the school premises with my mother and older brother. My mind raved with many thoughts as of how I was going to make friends, or if the teacher was going to be mean and cruel. I lacked confidence of how I was going to do on that day.…
