A Little History Of Philosophy By Nigel Warburton
Nigel Warburton is a british philosopher and writer. He was born on march 30th, 1962. He is best known for his philosophical books. His most popular is A Little History of Philosophy, however, he has also written: Philosophy: The Basics, Philosophy: The Classics, Thinking from A to Z, The Art Question, and Free Speech: A Very Short Introduction. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Bristol and then continued his education and received his PhD from the Darwin College of the University of Cambridge. Apart from being an author he also runs Virtual Philosopher, where he regularly podcasts. He previously worked as the Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the open University and Lecturer in Philosophy at Nottingham University,

As Warburton said in chapter 5 of A Little History of Philosophy “If it starts to rain just as you have to leave your house, that is unfortunate. But if you have to go out, apart from putting on a raincoat or getting an umbrella, or cancelling your appointment, there isn’t much you can do about it. You cant stop the rain no matter how much you want to. Should you be upset about this? Or should you be philosophical? ‘Being philosophical’ simply means accepting what you can’t change.”. Life and death are inevitable, so it is important to make the time that we have on this planet memorable and enjoyable. As many people say life is far too short, and they wish they had more time to complete their dreams or make something more of their lives. Seneca, or Seneca the younger, thought of life not being too short. “The problem as he saw it was not how short our lives are, but rather how badly most of us use what time we have.” (chapter 5, pg 31). Seneca did not believe that life was too short to complete your dreams as he found time to be a playwright, a politician, and a successful businessman, all apart from being a philosopher. The definition of society according to the merriam-webster dictionary is: people in general thought of as living together in organized communities with shared laws, traditions, and values. In A Little History of Philosophy Warburton talks about Immanuel Kant who has two philosophies, one about they way we think and how it's impacted by society and the other about human morality. He states “We know, for example, that lemons tastes bitter but only through having tastes them )or because someone else tells us about their experience of tasting lemons). it isn’t true by definition that lemons taste bitter - that is something that is learnt through experience.” Kant’s example states that lemons may not be bitter but the fact that we have heard from others that they are our brain thinks that every lemon tastes sour. This shows the impact that society, the people in our communities, have on the way we think. Kant also uses the example of how all cats have tails, however, not all cats do infact have
