A Direct Personal Style Analysis
The author mentions about "A Direct and Personal Style" he explained that the preacher should be personal to address. I'm not really sure about this concept, it is contradicting to what I learned from the past. I was taught, using the pronoun "you" in sermon may offend the listener. Because of that, we should always use "we" to avoid conflict with the listeners. Furthermore, he added "Therefore, a sermon should not sound like a thesis read to a congregation. It should sound like lively conversation where the speaker is thinking in the act of speaking" I agree that sermon shouldn't be read.     In chapter one of “Lectures To My Students” Spurgeon is debating the point that men seeking to become ministers must first be saved. His emphasis in this chapter that men need to be examine by themselves to ensure that they belong to Christ and are one of his children. He also points outs that all ministers preacher or pastor must first be a example to what they are preaching. They must practice what they preach. When you look at chapter 3 Spurgeon points out that a pastor must be a man who stays in constant prayer daily. He ought to pray more than the people he is leading. He further argues that a devoted prayer life will empower the pastor's sermons as well as their delivery. The pastor that does not pray over his work because it shows his arrogance, for he elevates his thoughts without seeing the need to appeal to God, but his prayer should be that of one who seeking and searching for something to say to the people because he realizes that its not him who speaks to the people but God who uses him as a willing vessel to speak to his own people. Chapter 4 examines how as pastors along with our congregation should pray in front of other people. Spurgeon believes that we should pray with our hearts and from our hearts and not pray from a written script. God alone must be the object, and Scripture must be quoted accurately. Spurgeon finishes this chapter offering practical advice for the length, current, etc. of public prayers. In chapter 5 Spurgeon explains what a sermon should have in its contents. He points out that they should be made up of solid doctrine and be well throughout. The doctrine should coincide with biblical text itself, while all ways revealing the gospel.     As revealed by my personal Life Styles Inventory (Figure 1), my primary thinking style and back-up thinking style were Conventional (4 o’clock position) and Affiliative (2 o’clock position) respectively. There are many ways in which both the Conventional thinking style and Affiliative thinking style manifest in my life and work, none of which were all that evident until I explored my personal Life Styles Inventory.     The Life Styles Inventory™ (LSI) presents a series of questions in the areas of personal satisfaction, stress, effectiveness and quality of interpersonal relationships and then collates participant responses into a circumplex identifying 12 specific patterns or styles of thinking, behaving and interacting on a personal, management and leadership level--representing the essence of an individual's effectiveness.     My “primary” personal thinking style as shown in my circumplex is The Humanistic-Encouraging Style. This style means that I am “accepting of myself, and accept others for who they are without question or criticism” (Human 2010). Humanistic-Encouraging individuals believe they can “assist others in fulfilling their potential by providing a supportive climate that inspires self-improvement” (Human 2010). I always tried to believe when a subordinate told me that they could accomplish setting up a display in a certain amount of hours. My “backup” personal thinking style is The Competitive Style. I believe my backup style of being competitive is what pushes me to be all I can be. Competition is my motivation to succeed. I think I have developed this style by the environment I grew up in. As a child, my friends and I had races to see who could run the fastest, hop scotch competitions, and contests for the best cheerleading routines.
