A Class Divided Analysis
The Human Race Unified

Each individual in any given society may recall a time when they had been given the short end of the stick. This indicates a deadly form of human interaction known to all as social bias which is responsible for segregation all around the world. In the segment “A Class Divided” by Frontline, the long-standing bias is broken down and annihilated by Mrs. Elliott and her student counterparts. Informing people in diverse environments everywhere that not judging others is critical because it helps everyone walk in one another’s shoes, it demonstrates how demoralizing people may be harmful and it gives a reality check that improves the social atmosphere. They were able to feel the sense of empowerment that King's shooter felt as a white man and also the lack thereof held by the world's most influential civil rights activist. The difficult lesson Mrs. Elliott was trying revealed to the children the truth behind the death of an innocent black leader. The body language of the students makes an excellent example of how any person may react in a situation where they are being daunted based on physical appearance. The shimmering grins projected across their faces dimmed to frowns and unease when told they were not as good as their classmates. This recurring theme of isolation is the small price these children must pay in order to understand the mentality of the arrogant people of the past. In the simulation there were noticeably few disruptive, chaotic members on each side and a very large majority of non-reactive people. That demonstrates a group can change opinions based on the voice of a small percentage. The sense of relief and togetherness the test subjects felt after the experiment seemed helpful to improve their function as a unit and even helped to raise test scores. When injustice befalls among children, they look towards a trusted adult to understand why they are being mistreated. The concept may confuse school aged kids. The way Mrs. Elliott confronts this is correct because in the end all of the children take away a positive message indicating that unfairness is wrong. This actually is a reliable way of teaching discrimination because if they didn't have to go through that experience, they may not know how to respond later on in life when witnessing someone being discriminated against. The school is surrounded by racially segregated neighborhoods. The city is home to many workers. But these workers do not survive off career made jobs, but do off daily tasks. Even though Lower Richmond is trying to thrive, its academic system struggles greatly. The chapter continues to speak of other schools in the area that has predominantly black students.     Susan Eaton, the author of The Children in Room E4: American Education on Trial, writes narrative brilliantly. She starts the book by introducing a Puerto Rican boy, Jeremy Otero, who lives in the inner city of Hartford. Over the course of the book, Eaton follows him and his classmates’ third, fourth and fifth grade trajectories at the racially segregated Simpson-Waverly Elementary School. Every so often, she switches to following the Sheff v. O’Neill case from the 1990’s. Initially, this book is engaging; Eaton’s writing style contains a subtle touch of humor alongside her clear messages. I especially enjoyed the way she carefully crafted the images in Jeremy’s world. The first time Eaton meets Jeremy, she describes him as a “chubby, grinning third grader waddling up the corridor toward us [who was] too wide for little boy clothes [but] too short for bigger sizes” (7). The image of the child Eaton immediately brought to my mind stayed with me for the rest of the book, and made me feel connected to the children on a more personal level. By the end of the book, I really cared about the children in room E4. I wanted them to succeed in their lives, despite the heavily stacked odds against them. My favorite parts of the book were the parts that included the kids and their vivacious teacher, Ms. Lois Luddy, who won Hartford’s Teacher of the Year Award in 2002. She really pushed Jeremy’s class to succeed, battling the expectations set in place for the children entering these very racially segregated schools.…

    A class divided is a documentary about a teacher named Jane Elliot who teaches her students about racism first hand. She divides the students into two groups, the blue eyes, and the brown eyes. For the first day, the “brown eyed” children are not able to go to recess, or lunch at the same time as the rest of the children. They wear a blue collar around their necks so that they are obviously different at a distance from the other students. They are not allowed to drink from the same water fountains, use the playground equipment, or even play with the blue eyed children. The next day, the roles are reversed. During these two days Jane Elliot would make comments about the children wearing the collars to degrade them. She would point out if one of them wasn’t ready on time, or if they forgot something. She would say things like “That’s how blue eyed people are” “Brown eyed people are better than blue eyed people” (J. Elliot, A Class Divided, 1985). After the children who weren’t wearing a collar noticed Mrs. Elliot saying these kinds of things, they would also chime in and begin saying things about the kids wearing the collars. Mrs. Elliot said “I watched wonderful, thoughtful, children turn into nasty, vicious, discriminating little third graders.”(J. Elliot, A Class Divided, 1985) .The movie showed the students come back for their fifteenth class reunion to talk about this life long lesson that their third grade teacher taught them. All of the students said it was a lesson they have never forgotten and something that changed their lives forever.     At 1:00 p.m. I entered into Evoline C. West Elementary school on Thursday, July 12 2012 for an interview with Mrs. Yolanda Lawrence.     Its stresses how privileged groups hold more power and have more advantages. It expressed that the social conditions of each group causes a struggle for power. The students in room 203 all hate each other because their gangs are rivals. The gangs are constantly fighting for the most power, that is why many of them kill one another. In the class, constant fights would break out between the students and when Erin changed up the seating plan, the whole class was disgruntled about being integrated with one another. The racism displayed towards The Freedom Writers can also be explained with the conflict theory. The students of class 203 are subjected to discrimination as the white teachers and students are strongly against the integration program. Ava and the other students hate white people because they are privileged in the aspects of money, power, and opportunities. The class disliked Erin and Ben in the beginning because of their skin color. The students feel as if the white students and teachers have more power because white students get a better education, and the white teachers do not want to give the multiracial students books or resources, and are not allowed field trips. There is a constant struggle for power between the white teachers and the students of class 203, which is why they constantly act out. They want to be treated fairly. In addition, the conflict theory explains income inequality. The movie shows that people with more money are of a higher class and they have more power and opportunities.
