Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve In John Wesley hymn story “A Charge to Keep I Have” there is a section that exemplifies how being involved in the Trio program has helped me to find my purpose. “ A charge to keep I have, A God to glorify, a never-dying soul to have and fit for the sky, to serve the present age, my calling to serve.” Growing up in a single parent home and being the youngest of eight children was challenging. We lived in a shackle blue house where my mother was transient. She juggled three jobs and worked extremely hard to provide for my siblings and I. We were poor, but we had each other. I, however, never let my financial state hinder me from great achievement. I learned work ethic early from my mother. She instilled in me that hard work and dedication are a necessity to achieve my goals. My parents immigrated from Haiti and the Dominican Republic to the United States so that their children could have a better life and receive an education. My first volunteering efforts began in high school at the YMCA, starting as an attendee, to volunteer, and now as a camp counselor. I was so excited to take on a leadership role because it was important for me to be a positive role model for the current students just as my mentors once did for me. When I entered college I immediately enrolled in Trio Student Support Services because of the amazing experience I had in the upward bound program in high school. Trio Student Support Services are a second family. The faculty has helped nurture and cultivate me into becoming a scholar and an intellectual by providing me with tutoring opportunities and countless seminars. These resource has been the primary reason I have been able to excel at Hampton University thus far. I have been on the Dean’s list every semester since I first
