I would enjoy translating theoretical knowledge to clinical practice. Life-long learning in a diverse and dynamic environment which no other career can offer suits my personality. I would find intellectually rewarding the assembly of all the jigsaw pieces together – history taking, applying cutting-edge scientific innovation to real-life clinical scenarios, and analysing research findings to determine a diagnosis. I am currently undertaking an EPQ to investigate the role gene expression profiling would play in the prognosis of cancer as a result of my interest in genetics.
Relocating to foreign countries at a young age, the integration into the English education system was only made seamless by my adaptability and diligence. I owe my matured appreciation for cultural differences to having had to overcome the cultural barriers. These qualities would equip me to become a doctor. I also developed a trait for learning other languages after being made aware of the primacy of communication.
Achieving the highest marks in my year for German, I was selected for a student-exchange programme where my team-working and communication skills were honed by working with those from diverse cultural backgrounds. Outside my academia, I play tennis and have been teaching myself guitar where dedication has led me to improvements. Inside school, I run a science club for Key stage 3 pupils weekly which would prepare me to take on one of the roles of being a doctor - teaching. Fundraising to raise mental health awareness with YoungMinds charity has further enhanced my public relation and organisational skills. In Year 12, I was chosen as my year representative to the School forum which has allowed me to mature my own ethical and moral values as well as broadening others’. I have completed the Gold DofE expedition where my assertiveness saw us through

Being in the medical field for the past ten years, I have seen the growth and changes in the medical field. When I began my nursing career as a medical assistant, I noticed many other nurses continuing their education to be able to have greater hands on approach in nursing. This opened my eyes to the endless possibilities that a nurse can do, whether it’s with direct patient care or being a resource to patients and other nurses around. After completing my RN in May of 2015, I decided that I really enjoyed being a mentor and teacher to other nurses. That is why I am continuing on with my education in hopes to one day receive my Master’s degree in Nursing and be able to utilize the knowledge and skills that I build, to educate patients. I still…

There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

Coming from a remote village in India where access to medical care is limited, I have had the dream of becoming a physician since I was very young. I am glad that I spent enough time in researching those career paths that I had absolutely no hesitation or distraction when I started pursuing my career in medicine. Today, I can say that pediatrics is my only career interest.…

There I was laying on the field, during the second half of my football game, tossing and turning as I held my right shoulder in agonizing pain. I looked up only to see the trainer looking down at me with a concerned look. “What’s wrong?” he asked. Repeatedly I tapped my shoulder as I was struggling to get the words out. He helped me up and walked me back to the sideline. I waited for what seemed like hours for the game to end. A few days later, I went to a local doctor to get an X-ray. The doctor told me that there was nothing wrong and that the pain should subside in a couple of days, and it did. Later in the season as I went in for a tackle, I felt my shoulder pop. Immediately I was in pain and thought to myself, “ It happened again.” This…
