A game-changing artist and an impervious celebrity, Lil Wayne began as his career as a near-novelty — a preteen delivering hardcore hip-hop — but through years of maturation and reinventing the mixtape game, he developed into a million-selling rapper with a massive body of work, one so inventive and cunning that it makes his famous claim of being the “best rapper alive” worth considering. Born Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr. and raised in the infamous New Orleans neighborhood of Hollygrove, he was a straight-A student but never felt his true intelligence was expressed through any kind of report card. He found music was the best way to express himself, and after taking the name Gangsta D he began writing rhymes. Combining a strong work ethic with aggressive…

The New York Times had a great profile piece on Nicki Minaj titled "The Passion Of Nicki Minaj", written by Vanessa Grigoriadis. Nicki opened up about her tough childhood, attending a top performing arts school, her hard beginnings as a rap artist, and having to be a "boss ass b*tch" to get respect in an industry that promotes a misogynist culture. And lastly her finding her own independence and success outside of a relationship. The profile was a nice read and had great insight into Nicki's career, so in case you've missed it I took the liberty to highlight the best parts for you below!…

In this essay I will be comparing the differences and similarities between Tupac Amaru Shakur and Christopher Wallace also knows as “Biggie” who both are male rappers and reined a pretty short but yet famous mid 90’s career in the music industry. I first would start off with Notorious B.I.G and his differences from Tupac. Biggie is from Brooklyn, NY, he was the only child raised by his mother Voletta Wallace, who lived in the poverty-stricken projects of Brooklyn. Biggie took to his surroundings at young age by transporting and selling drugs and also raising his daughter who he didn’t get to see much. After an incident that involved him and his friend, Biggie was spared by his friends loyalty to him by taking the fall for felony gun and drug charges; which then drove Biggie to put his all into his music and then caused him to meet his soon to be manger/business partner/best friend/ Sean Comb also knows as Puff Daddy and many various names.…

came into this world on September 27, 1982 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was raised in the renowned suburb of Hollygrove, where he was a straight “A” student. He felt as though report cards never really reflected his true intelligence, and that music was the best way to convey himself. He soon took on the name Gangsta D, and started creating rhymes. At age 11, he persuaded the Cash Money label to take him on, even if it was just doing odd jobs. In 1997, he dropped the name Gangsta D, due to a father whom abandoned him, and officially became known as Lil Wayne. Since the start of his career, he has gone on to win 40 awards, and has been nominated for 56, not to mention several hits along the…

There are few hip hop artists who have had such an immense impact on the music world as Tupac Shakur. The West Coast rapper was born in New York City, and would enter the music business through a guest spot on a Digital Underground track in 1991. From those collaborations, it was a short step to Interscope Records, where he would create another two solo albums before launching into fame and fortune with the group Thug Life.…

Tupac Amaru Shakur was born in the East Harlem section of Manhattan in New York City.[3] He was named after Túpac Amaru II, an Incan revolutionary who led an indigenous uprising against Spain and subsequently received capital punishment. His mother, Afeni Shakur, was an active member of the Black Panther Party in New York in the late 1960s and early 1970s; Shakur was born just one month after her acquittal on more than 150 charges of "Conspiracy against the United States government and New York landmarks" in the New York Panther 21 court case.[4] Although officially unconfirmed by the Shakur family,[5] several sources list his birth name as either "Parish Lesane Crooks"[6] or "Lesane Parish Crooks".[7] Afeni feared her enemies would attack her son, and disguised their relation using a different last name, only to change it three months[6] or a year later, following her marriage to Mutulu Shakur.…

Just like many other rappers, Aubrey “Drake” Graham raps about how tough his life is/was and how he went from having nothing to having anything he wanted. However many people claim that these rappers rap about a life that they have never truly lived and that they try to create a public image that is fake which portrays them as a thug when they truly are not. In the articles, “Faux Americana: Why I Still Love Bruce Springsteen”, by Stephen Metcalf and “More Rock, Less Talk: Live Music Turns Off the Voices in Our Heads”, by Carrie Brownstein the authors discuss how they determine if an artist is authentic or not. One could argue that Drake is inauthentic due to the fact that he was an actor and lied about his background, along with the fact that he does not connect well with his fans during his live performances.…

Dating back to the eras of the Beatles and the Rollingstones, music has always had an affect on the ways that people act, dress, and live their lives. With the arrival of rap and hip-hop music in the mid 1980's, new lyrics and cultural values began to spread throughout the radio frequencies of every household and car in society. Rap provided a new form of music - a music based upon fast and catchy rhythms that could launch an audience off of their seats, forcing them to dance in the isles…

Growing up in the 1980’s and the 90’s I became a huge fan of Hip-Hop music. My friends and I used to sit around for hours listening to our favorite rappers on the radio and watching the videos on television. We would argue for hours about who was a better lyricist and why. Now as I have grown older and the music I have grown to love and still listen to has changed, I find myself asking a very good question. What has changed in Hip-Hop from the time I was started listening to now? The answer is as complex as it is simple, the music itself has changed. The Hip-Hop music of today seems to be more commercial as opposed to being artistic and message driven.…

Music Lyrics being NON-VIOLENT Rap music can be considered a style of art, and a way for the artists to express feelings through their words on paper. However, there are quite a few rap artists that get criticized for their lyrics. In my essay, I want to discuss why rappers use certain lyrics in their music and why people shouldn’t believe that it causes violence among the younger generations. People shouldn’t censor the music just because of violent, vulgar and abusive messages it promotes to the world. I believe in my own mind, that there is a reason for these types of lyrics that rap artists use and I will simply explain those reasons in this essay. Rap has been called one of the most important music forces to emerge in two decades. It’s pounding beats and staccato rhymes exploded on the streets of the urban America in the early 1980s and since have become the theme music and lyrical heart of the vibrant youth culture called hip-hop ( SIRS 1993). There are many different types of rap artist. There are some that talk about money, some talk about righteousness, and the list goes on and on. Every rap artist had their own way of expressing themselves. There are those that talk about sex, drugs, and violence who receive the negative attention( SIRS 1993). People, think this so- called gangster rap is a bad influence on children in the world and that it promotes violence and that it also is abusive to women. Delores Tucker, head of national congress of black women has been among those pressuring different record companies to stop distributing gangster rap music. There were other significant names that participated in this action. Names like Senate Majority leader Bob dole, and former education Secretary William J. Bennett(Surveys, pg. 1). There are some rap artists that have been openly criticized for their lyrics. Rappers like Lil Kim, Too Short, Snoop Doggy Dogg, and a member from “Too Live Crew,” named Luke Skywalker. These rap artists in the past have been…

In the past few years, the music industry has seen the ascension of many prolific names. Some generations producing one great name, while some generate two icons, which more often than not, are persistently compared by their respective fans, in an attempt to determine which one is better. Many female icons have been associated with one another through their whole career. The comparisons span from the likes of Madonna with Cyndi Lauper, and Diana Ross with Aretha Franklin. In this day and age, two new artists have been subjected to the same fate, Beyoncé, and Shakira. While Beyoncé and Shakira, two popular musical artists, have some similarities, I feel that Beyoncé is the better artist, due to her background, performance style, music and lyrics, and endeavors outside of music have more impact than Shakira.…
