Andrea, I like the paragraph you pulled from the book because it really sheds light on the major changes of how life is lived now. To Ish, the great disaster is something he has experiences first hand where the younger members of the tribe have only heard of what happened. As generations continue the great disaster becomes history, another event in a book. The first hand experience is gone because all who lived during it have pasted. There is a world of difference between experiencing something and being told about something. It reminds me of 9/11, being that freshmen entering high school this past year are the first class to learn about 9/11 as history because they were not alive during it. It’s a foreign concept for me to think that student…

Streets are full, people working and a plane strikes a tower in the center of New York City. Working on a navy base and planes come out unexpected with terrorists planning to destroy everything. The bombing of Pearl Harbor was definitely unexpected, as was the plane wrecks on 9/11; many can believe Pearl Harbor did not hit as many emotions because it was not terrorists just people from Japan with hate. Walking the bridge from El Paso into Ciudad Juarez, America’s number one narcotics corridor, means stepping into a world that is many times more vibrant and violent, richer and poorer, yet still strangely invisible from the other side. A vendor hawking crucifixes runs from the police. A preacher waving a Bible shames three painted girls. The rust-colored hand of a beggar pokes out from beneath an Indian shawl. A four-year-old boy in a Joe Camel cap wanders the streets after midnight while his father sings $2 love songs. Then there are the dead bodies; the famous and the infamous and the anonymous gunned down in restaurants, stuffed into trunks, dumped in the street, sometimes choked with wire or burned by acid, often with their hands taped, legs bound, and heads hooded. While the typical headline shouts, “Another Victim”, this is all just business as usual.…

Marshalls, without a moment 's notice I am thrown into an ambulance that is being shared by 3 victims and taken to St Vincent 's hospital, where I am bandaged up and put on painkillers while a volunteer nurse cleans and disinfects my wounds. I pass out and wake up hours later by another nurse who tells me the bed needs to be used by another victim. I am told to go to the lobby which is filled with injured men, women, and children. Everyone is in shock, everyone with the same glazed eyes, everyone silent. There is once same focus, the television mounted to the corner of the room tuned to wb11. Kaity Tong is on the screen, with a background of a gigantic cloud of smog. The title underneath her waist reads "America Under Attack" in bold red letters. I come to the realization that the cloud of smoke was once the building I worked in. My office, which I spent late nights working at the same wooden desk with my name on the 7 inch desk plate, was now gone. The company that I have given 17 years to, was now…

The attacks of September 11, 2001 on our country was one of the most tragic and deadly days in our history. It brought a country together and the American strength of freedom and unity became a battle cry. After the dust had cleared, the questions came about that asked, how could this have happened? “All men are created equal and are endowed by their creator the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. In these United States of America, men and women should not be judged by the religion they practice but by the content of their character. Unfortunately, in the post 9/11 era, American Muslims have been denied access to this “promised land”-- subjected to derision in these “Glorious” United States of America. Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, perspectives on Islam have undergone dramatic changes, with 43% of all Americans harboring prejudiced feelings toward Islam. From this, the general perception on Islam has turned to unfounded validation of stereotyping and racial profiling (Gallup,1).…

One of the worst feelings in the world is having all the warmth around you ripped away in 2 seconds, and the second worst is it being 4 in the morning. It doesn’t matter what you are doing that day, waking up by having your blankets pulled off is not an enjoyable feeling. When I open my eyes it takes me a couple seconds to remember what is really happening, I peer around the room and see my mom walking out of my room “Jessica, get up, you need to get moving or we will be late getting your cousins”.…

I was a tall skyscraper that was known to the world as World Peace Through Trade. In 1946, the New York Legislature came up with a group called The World Trade Corporation and they developed The World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. In 1958, the World Trade Center Corporations hired three guys named Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill to come up with a design for me. A year later the designs were released to the public. By the time they actually started constructing me it was August of 1968. It only took a few years for them to build me and it was December 23, 1970 when I was finally done being built. I was 1,368 feet tall, making me the world’s tallest building at the time. So many people worked their that the i had my own zip code Many companies came in and used me for space to have offices. Some businesses moved in even before I was done being built to claim their spots. Many workers would bring their children and leave them in the daycare that i had. Not only was I an office building but I had a restaurant on the 107th floor. It was called The Windows of the World. Along with a restaurant I also had a subway that had a stop underground for all the people who either worked in my tower or nearby. There were so many activities you could do besides just working. I had an observation deck for tourists to come and see the…
