8 Mile Symbolism
8 Mile the movie was based on the life of Marshall Mathers “Eminem” prior to becoming successful and famous. I’ll be analyzing the symbolic relationship of various characters in relation to the main character Jimmy Smith. I chose to focus solely on the women of the film, which I believe to be Mr. Mathers and director Curtis Hanson’s direct portrayal of individual’s from Mr. Mather’s real life. Various characters in the film are portrayed to the audience as how Mr. Mathers personal feelings on them. The audience is given a direct look inside the mind of the infamous rapper’s conflicting opinion on his friends and family in real life. The protagonist Jimmy “Rabbit” Smith is played by Marshall Mathers aka Eminem. The film follows Jimmy as he attempts to achieve his dream of becoming a successful rapper. The story takes place in the Detroit project of 8 mile road. Jimmy faces many obstacles through his journey to the top of the Detroit hip hop scene such as leaving his girlfriend and being left with no choice but to live with his mother inside her trail park home. His lack of confidence in himself is evident throughout the movie, as various friends and family attempt to lighten his spirits despite the present state of his life. The presence of Mr. Mathers starring in the film no doubt had an influence on the director’s decisions of various scenes. In defense comparing the descriptions of relatives and close family friends from the documentary bares a close resemblance to the film. The contradicting and conflicting feelings Mr. Mathers has for various women from his life gives some ethos in why he grotesquely describes women in his songs. Although this is far from an excuse, the film does provide a somewhat skewed outlook for the audience on why he says certain things in relation to his
