One and a half years ago, when my husband came to Florida State University for his doctorate in oceanography, I accompanied him from China. When I first stepped on American soil, many American things deeply attracted me.
Since enrolling at the community college for my associate's degree, I have especially noticed the differences between Chinese and American attitudes toward studying. Many of my American classmates are also curious about societal, family and educational systems in China. Expressing my ideas about the effects of these systems on college students in China may help my friends here understand the differences between us.
China is a big country, not only in its land but also in its tremendous population. Although the government spends a huge amount of funds on developing education every year, it still can't satisfy the innumerable students who are seeking knowledge. Thus, unlike in America, where everybody can go to college, a lot of Chinese students do not have the opportunity to study at colleges.
For example, the government has a policy that people must be under 25 years of age to be able to go to college. Also, students must pass an annual National University Entrance Exam, which is very strict. Often, only one out of 10 students pass it. The students call this testing month ``Dark July,'' implying that this exam decides their fate. Not only do the students regard it as important, but also their parents treat it seriously.
In America, students can decide to go to college by themselves and their parents hardly interfere with them.
In China, old, traditional thoughts are still kept in people's minds. They think that studying at college is an incomparable honor. If a student is enrolled in college, his or her parents are extremely happy. They will immediately tell all their relatives and

The second main topic about this book is how many college graduates and the lack of jobs to fill. After the child grows up and gets in a good college, the hard work and pressure does not stop. In China, college students have very few friends because of how hard they work in class. They want to be the best student with the best grades, so there is no time for socializing. One big problem today in China is today he amount the amount of middle class jobs there are. Colleges let out four million graduates yearly,…

In “The Educated Giant” written by Nicholas D. Kristof, he explains why China is likely to over take the United States as the worlds most important country of the century due to its large focus on education. In the article, Kristof talks about his trip to China and the education system he observed. Beginning with peasant schools, he discovered the level of math being taught was equal to his children’s excellent schools in the New York area. While his children won’t learn a language in school until seventh grade, Chinese students begin English as young as first grade. Kristof gave reasons as to why he believes Chinese students do so well. First, is because they are harder workers. Students show up to school at 6:30 a.m. for tutoring before classes start at 7:30 a.m. They also do homework every night, including when they are out of school for an eight week summer vacation. The second reason Kristof gives is because China has an enormous cultural respect for education, part of its Confucian Legacy. Teachers are better paid and treated superior to educators in America. The third reason given is because the Chinese believe that those who get the best grades are the hardest workers. This contrasts popular American belief that the best students are ones who are innately the smartest. Kristof then touches on the fact that Chinese has its own faults, including bribes, enormous fees and over crowded classrooms.…

Another thing about the people here, the students especially. They’re so American. I don’t even bother telling them the name of our town , they’ll just pretend they understand when I say it’s far outside of Shanghai. Their sense of independence here is shockingly selfish too, many of them left home simply because they wanted to. I heard one woman complaining about how she’s forced to support her aging parents. Could you imagine being so selfish? All I’m doing here is studying to someday support Mom and Dad, even if I’m only able to do so financially from afar…

In conclusion, although comparing to native students, the Chinese students are take a small part portion of whole students. However, I have to admit that the Chinese students union indeed can help Chinese students in some ways since the Chinese students are far from their hometown. It will provide a sense of home to let Chinese people feel they are not alone, they have a “home”. By using discourse, social identity, conversation and discourse map that can be the reason to explain the value of Chinese students…

How to Run a High School

    • 391 Words

The Chinese have 3 major philosophical ways to run a group of people: these are Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism. 2 of these are rather extreme to a point in which they are simply not used or to strict to work out properly. Leaving us with something not too harsh, yet not to out there- this is Confucianism. A high school is not only a place where kids get an education, but rather a social collaboration zone where you meet new people. In Confucianism there are five basic relationship; "ruler/subject"- the most visible in a school environment, "father/son", "husband/wife", "brother/brother", "friend/friend". In a system under which it is important to maintain each one of these to have a solid life- it a good reason to run a school by these because you do not get your social and home lives mixed up- leading to better grades. Confucius, past CEO (who would have guessed), himself was a teacher of a verity of things. This leads to him being educated in the concept of school, and gaining knowledge- leading to a more experienced founder of an educational system (the base of what high school theoretically is). Some of us study more than others, some don't study at all but "to study without thinking is futile, and to think without studying is dangerous"(2.15). That meaning don't study hazily- have some meaning behind what you're doing. It shouldn't be that you just mindlessly read through a whole book, and not gaining or remembering {from} what you just read, but at the same time one mustn't make blunt statements without the most minimalistic proof around there theory, let alone later start an argument with a person who is well educated on the subject at hand.…

Getting the opportunity to go to college is a good thing, because it gives you a chance to be on your own and grow as a person. In other parts of the world only men can have a good education; in American anybody is able to achieve a higher education. Chinese education is focused on students academic performance, while Canadian education is pay more attention on students’ daily performance and group works. In China, high school students are constantly learning knowledge and doing homework, all of these hard work just for get good mark into the university. The college entrance examination is one of important in Chinese people’s life, This is an examination that can change the fate of students. Parents in China think if their children can not get in a good university, then the child's life is basically abandoned. But in Canada is different, Canadian high school is more focused on cultivating students' interests, so as to select the most suitable for their professional. And they are in accordance with the students' daily performance and homework to give students the final assessment, rather than China only look at the final results. China has implemented that kind of education model, but also because the population in China is too much, too competitive, they can not take care of each student at the same time. China and Canada should learn from each other, China should that students have more time to do group works, and Canada should that students pay more attention in academic…

Growing up as a naturalized Chinese-American has greatly shaped my personality, interests, and motivations. My parents, who fled rural China in search of a better life, never completed high school. This meant that I did not have the luxury of the guidance offered by most parents, so I became adamant to succeed where my parents had not; I became independent from an early age with a strong belief that hard-work and perseverance equate success.…

Higher education in other countries such as France, for instance, is offered at little or no cost to the students. Any American student accustomed to paying the sometimes very expensive tuition fees of US schools would most likely start packing their bags and dusting off their passports as soon as they heard this. What many people forget is that tuition pays for not only a general education, but the overall experience as well, including life on campus. The majority of American college campuses are kept very up-to-date, while still maintaining their individual charm and historic backgrounds. Class settings vary from small,…
