Pluralism works in the way that groups and coalitions are constantly fighting for power within the government to fit their agendas and the people they are vying for. This can be seen with the bike rack debate that has been presented in Sierra Vista’s city council. The special interest group is offering an award of being a bike friendly city to Sierra Vista in hopes of making people healthier, however public opinion support of the bike racks has been dismal at best. There were two examples of this. The first one being about the school that had “International Day” where different races, ethnic groups, and cultures could rejoice and demonstrate their homeland’s culture. The school, which was predominantly white, accepted this ethnic variation within their school’s society and let different ethnic groups have the main stage in their school for the day - something that does not happen very often. The idea of disciplined pluralism is the difference between centralized and decentralized decision-making as it pertains to the economy (i.e. the government). To put in another way, communist and socialist country’s economies exist under monoism where the government dictates the terms and conditions of markets. In United States and other market economies, the market largely determines what is good for the market by exploring possibilities and cultivating innovation with profit motive. This may seem counterintuitive, the idea that markets operate at their optimal efficiency when left alone and evolve naturally, but it is the essential requirement of a market economy. In a market economy, a process of perpetual experimentation by entrepreneurs exists, where most experiments fail and are terminated, but the very few that succeed are rapidly imitated. The reason that centralized systems cannot compete is that innovation cannot be mandated, rather entrepreneurs must have a motive for exploration and markets must be able to meet the demands of the customer. State-controlled economies are incapable of dictating or maintaining this sort of framework. One blind spot I think I had at the start of the semester was the idea about disability. When you mention disability, I can honestly say that I always thought of the physical forms of disability. So when it came to helping accommodate for disabilities I would naturally think of things like wheelchair ramps or special seating in the offices. I never considered the fact that “invisible” disabilities were present in the workplace.
