Assignment 1

Describe how you might contribute to a lesson given to a group of seven year old children learning to play percussion instruments.

Obviously before the lesson starts the teacher needs to lay out the objectives of the lesson, including the plan for what the teaching assistants role will be. It could be possible that the teacher wants the assistant to support a small group of children who may have greater learning needs than the rest of the class. As a teaching assistant it would be my responsibility to help with the planning of the lesson – what equipment we need, what our desired learning goals are and how we will achieve them. Because the lesson will be involving percussion instruments we will be making a lot of noise. It would be unfair to other people in the school if we were disrupting their lesson.

It would be much more practical to house the lesson in a bigger room or one that was far away from other classrooms e.g. the school hall or even outside. Not only does this save the rest of the school but also gives our pupils a change of scenery. Changing the environment could also stimulate the children’s attention and make them much more interested in the lesson. It would be my responsibility as teaching assistant to set up the teaching space as discussed with the teacher before the lesson began. In this instance it would be making sure the instruments were all safely assembled and prepared for the pupils.

Another way I could contribute to the lesson would be when I broke away into my little group of pupils. I would show them how to play the instruments and give each of the children a chance to experiment on their own. I would also offer extra support for the pupils who need it and let the teacher know if there is anyone having particular difficulty with the task and work out if there is a way we can better aid them in future lessons.

My final contribution to the lesson would be ensuring the equipment used by the class was put away

    After outlining the learning outcomes the lesson starts with a ‘Find someone who’ ice breaker. This allows me to assess the learners, it’s a group work exercise to employ inclusive learning from the start and it creates a sociable, personable and safe learning environment for the session whilst incorporating functional skills.
