4.Describe the major experiments and scientists involved in the discovery of DNA as our hereditary material and its structure.
In 1998, 30,708 deaths were caused by firearms in the United States. Of that number, 12,102 were

murders, 17,424 were suicides, 366 were accidents, 316 had unknown reasons, and only 154 were

confirmed to be in self-defense. Guns are currently being used in this society for murders, celebration,

hunting and gang activity. Guns are used in the drill team, for war and by the police force. Guns should

not be used in such ways where others could be harmed or killed. They should be used only for self-

defense to protect themselves and their valuables, not as weapons to take other's lives.

The Gun Owners Foundation says that guns save more lives than they take and prevent more injuries

than they inflict. However, that is very untrue. The usage of guns for self defense to not self-defense

ratio is 1:22. For every time a gun is used in self-defense, there are 22 shootings that are not. Also, gun

violence costs the nation about one hundred billion dollars a year. Eighty per cent of the money used to

treat firearm injuries comes from taxpayer dollars.

The Gun Owners Foundation says that criminals avoid armed citizens. A law in a city in Florida that

required at least one gun in every household caused the crime rate in that city to drop 89%. Another law

that permitted the carrying of concealed weapons dropped the homicide rate by 36%. But having a gun

in a household raises the risk of a homicide or suicide. A household with a gun is three times more

likely to have a homicide using a gun and five times more likely to have a suicide using a gun. Suicide

is not a crime, but it is still a death and is just as bad. Guns are clearly dangerous, no matter how they

are used. Even though a household may have a gun, the head of the household may not be trained in

using a gun, and may cause an accidental shooting.

The Gun Owners Foundation also says that gun control such as the Brady Bill, is not the

Opponents of concealed carry argue that increased gun ownership leads to more gun crime and unintended gun injuries. They contend that concealed handguns increase the chances of arguments becoming lethal, and that society would be safer with fewer guns on the street, not more. Dr. John Lott, published More Guns, Less Crime which concluded that the "shall-issue" laws linked with a reduction in violent crimes in 1988. Lott argued that if states that did not permit concealed handguns in 1992 had permitted them in 1977, 1,570 murders, 4,177 rapes, 60,000 aggravated assaults, and 12,000 robberies would have been prevented between 1977 and…

Don B. Kates discusses “shall-issue” laws on concealed carry permits in the United States. In his article, he begins by evaluating a famous study done by John Lott. His study credits the ‘deterrent’ effect of states’ “shall-issue” laws which spread handgun licensing out to responsible citizens who abide by the law and have a very minimal criminal record. Lott’s study suggests that “there is a massive reduction in violent crime in the 1990’s because criminals believe that most citizens within these “shall-issue” states have concealed handguns, therefore, are less likely to attack”. After reviewing Lott’s study, Kates criticizes the concept of a “gun-free zone”. In short he says that when one…

The right to have concealed handguns is they support citizens in self-defense and deters crime. With gang population and gang-related violence growing at an exponential rate, it is imperative that law abiding citizens are given the right under the constitution to defend themselves. The National Crime Victimization Surveys concluded that “robbery and assault victims who used a gun to resist were less likely to be attacked or to suffer an injury than those who used any other methods of self-protection or those…

One of the big supporters of owning firearms is The Future of Freedom Foundation, known as FFF, who wants the absolute right to own any weapon. Their reasoning is that people in America can only protect themselves from stronger dangers if they own firearms. They point out that weak people like women on the street can defend themselves against an attacker, and fewer hostage situations would happen when people in America can carry guns with them. People of FFF freely say that more guns equals less crime, and that in some of the states where gun ownership is not highly controlled, lower crime rate is experienced. (Benedict D. LaRosa, October, 2002)…

Snapshots of information about the guns used by criminals are available from official police records concerning the guns recovered in crimes and reports gathered from victims surveys that interview criminal surveys that interview victims of crime. From these sources, information is acquired about how often guns are involved in crime, how guns are used in crime, what general categories of firearms are most often used in crime, and, to a limited extent, the specific types of guns most frequently used by criminals. The different types of firearms include: handguns, revolvers, pistols, derringer, rifle, and shotguns. (Zawitz,…

    Gun rights

Sarah Thompson, a retired physician and a strong advocate for gun rights, made many strong arguments that validated gun usage for the law-abiding citizen. Specifically, Thompson is a psychiatrist, and has written more about the psychological fear of guns and how much of it is irrational. In this essay, Thompson addressed many misconceptions about crime rate that were skewed by uncontrolled studies. The fact that the medical field skewed results of published studies for compensation from the government is what makes Thompson so passionate about this subject, as she is a retired physician herself. As these statistics are debunked in the article, you begin to see that guns are most often a benefit to those using self-defense rather than to criminals, who will inevitably get their hands on a gun anyways. Another study, controlled and designed well, and described as almost indisputable shows evidence that crime rates decreased in areas overtime where concealed carry was legal. I found the study at University of Chicago’s website and found that the reference was valid in its description. The study was highly descriptive and explanatory in procedures and categorization of different kinds of assaults. I found the results to be convincing. Though I am not as radically driven as either of these authors (I wish to neither outlaw handguns or reduce restrictions on them), I am more inclined to side with Thompson on this issue. Thompson refers to factual data shown to be very accurate. These pieces of data are based on true occurrences and backed up by logic.…

It also says that if a person owns a gun, he or she is in higher risks of being a homicide victim. They conducted a study that consisted of taking in consideration all fifty states and examine the relationship between firearm murder rates and gun ownership from 1981 through 2010. After thirty years of study, the results according to (Siegel et al., 2013) were as follow; the mean percentage of gun ownership over all states was of 57.7%, the highest was of 76.8% in Mississippi and the lowest was of 25.8% in the state of Hawaii. From 1981 to 2010, the mean percentage of firearms ownership decreased from 60.6% to 51.7%. Finally the average handguns murder rate went down from 5.2 per 100, 000 in 1981 to 3.5 per 100,000 in 2010. Once they were done with the research, they found out a solid relationship between handgun murder rates and gun ownership rates in which states with higher levels of gun ownership also had extremely large numbers of deaths caused by firearms. All in all, the results of this study argue in favor with the idea of the more gun control there is, the less murder rates there is. Which means that this article also opposes the hypothesis of this…
