30 Years War
Over the years I have come to the conclusion that my life is not a highway, nor is it like a box of chocolates; my life is more like the Thirty Years' War. This was a European war that was fought from 1618-1648, and it can be considered the first real world war since most of Europe became involved. All of the fighting took place, however, within the Holy Roman Empire (Germany), even though the poor Germans did nothing to deserve it. True, they were having their own civil war, but then all the other countries of Europe decided that it was a good time to fight each other over the partitioning of Germany. The funny thing is, everything ended up pretty much the way it was before the war (land-wise), except that the German people looked up one day to see their country demolished by pillaging, ransacking armies of different races, creeds, and sizes.

My life is oftentimes as tumultuous as the Thirty Years' War. For example, I am mainly preoccupied with college searching at the moment. In this sense, I am having a civil war with myself; while one part of me wants one college for one reason, another part of me wants to rebel and go somewhere else. Meanwhile, it seems, complete strangers take advantage of my indecision to "advise" me on where I should go. This usually entails a long discussion over why so and so's alma mater coincidentally is also the "most absolute bestest" place in the world to study English.

My History teacher gets big kicks every time he tells the class that the Germans were only confusing themselves by naming their country The Holy Roman Empire, after all, "It wasn't holy, it wasn't Roman, and it wasn't an empire". I get the feeling I'm just about that deluded when I actually think I'll even get into a college, much less like it while I'm there.

The Defenestration of Prague wins first prize in "the most morbidly amusing act" category. This occurred when the Holy Roman Emperor, Matthias, sent peace emissaries to Bohemia, one of the countries

World War II was arguably the largest and most destructive war in history. It shaped the world we live in today and its shadows can still be found. Battles were fought on multiple continents, the air, and the sea. The many facets of the war have been explored by scholars and students for over 65 years. The many causes, the results and the importance of the battles won or lost lies in the eyes of the author. It can easily be assumed that this war flared from the cinders of World War I, but complexity of it expands from there. Similar to WWI, there were many conflicting situations leading up to the war, (Treaty of Versailles, Hitler and Mussolini’s actions, and failure of appeasement and the League of Nations) but Germany’s invasion of Poland set the wheels in motion (parallel to the assassination of Franz Ferdinand in WWI). This resulted in Britain and France declaring war on Germany in September 1939 (historyonthenet).…

The Thirty Year's War represented an extremely negative turning point for Germany. The wars for the most part were fought in Germany which would leave it in an extremely crippled state up until the nineteenth century. Germany endured the long, brutal war and all of its harsh effects even after the war was over. The war's and all of their effects such as the diseases and destruction, wiped out more than a third of Germany's population. The widespread conflict also had an incredibly negative impact on the economy of Germany and the resources. It made the continent wide trade depression even worse and brought an end to the great sixteenth century boom. Many people were homeless and put out of work which led them to resort to banditry and violence in order to survive. To top it all off the Empire was weakened and…
