3. Discuss Issues of Equality and Diversity and Ways to Promote Inclusion with Your Learners. Review Other Points of Referral Available to Meet the Potential Needs of Learners. (Recommended Word Count 300 – 400 Words.)
Diversity
When teaching in a class the students will be coming from all different backgrounds & cultures therefore consideration must be taken to represent the diverse range of learners who access provision, such as -

• A variety of teaching methods to be used following an assessment of different learning styles

• Assessment must be fair and not discriminate against any learner

• Language used by the teacher should be non-discriminatory and appropriate

• Discussion and comments within the learning environment are managed to ensure learner language is appropriate and non-discriminatory

• Materials and topics are presented in a way that are sensitive to equality and diversity

• Resources are adapted to ensure that learners can access information and to meet individual needs (large print, on tape, using symbols)

• Learners have the opportunity to fully evaluate the course in an open and anonymous way
Inclusion
The teacher should promote an environment that makes the learners feel relaxed and able to have a point of view without fear of ridicule. The teacher should also ensure that the learning environment is welcoming to all, e.g. neither too hot nor cold. The learner’s needs should be accommodated where ever possible. There needs to be an element of fun (incorporating funny videos with a message for example) and a mixture of teaching methods built into the training to ensure that everyone is included and more importantly that they feel included. Activities to include will be ones that promote learners working together in smaller groups, discussing ideas and then feeding back as a group.
Equality
Learners should be aware of their rights and responsibilities towards the other learners and the teacher. This can be enforced at the beginning of the session by being part of and agreeing the ground rules. Consideration should be taken to ensure the lesson will include a variety of all types of learning styles (VARK), this can be

Equality is ensuring individuals or groups of individuals are treated fairly and equally and no less favourably than others. Equality is about the rights of the learners to attend and participate regardless of age, sex, race, gender reassignment, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation, marriage/civil partnership and pregnancy /maternity. Diversity is about recognising and being tolerant of different views which individual people have, in terms of cultural backgrounds and different lifestyle choices relating to any characteristics they may have. A diverse society is what we have as every individual has a different culture, belief and life experience to the next. Inclusion is about including all the learners in ‘relevant activities rather than excluding them for any reason either directly or indirectly’ (Gravells 2008). ‘Every learner has the right to expect that they will receive high quality learning appropriate to their needs and circumstances ion a safe and healthy environment.’ (Success for all: DfES 2002). Inclusive teaching and learning is possible when promoted. In order to achieve this I combine both the training cycle and the learning styles from Kolb and Fry. These include using Concrete experience, Abstract Conceptualisation, Active Experimentation and Observation and Reflection. Learners the mixing up of which produces the learning styles that best suits a learner, ie; Converger, Diverger, Assimilator and Accommodator. By ensuring the lessons accommodate all learning styles all learners will feel inclusion. Along with the learning styles I would include relevant resource materials . If a learner requires more intervention then I may need to include the following; additional classroom support, adapted or specific resources, peer support, varied presentation, content selection, reducing or increasing time for activities Along with my…

As a teacher/trainer it is your role to plan and carry out clear learning sessions with material that is relevant to the subject. You will need to have the correct resources for each session and to determine the length and content of the sessions in relation to the length of the course. Once this has been planned you will need to decide the best way to implement your teaching by identifying the needs of your learners, your organisation and your own. Sessions may need to be adapted for learners depending on their individual preferred learning styles, motivations, previous educational experiences and any special needs a learner may have. You may need to arrange for initial assessments to be carried out in order to gain an understanding of a learners skills and knowledge along with interviewing learners to gain an insight to any possible barriers or challenges that may affect their learning, and if so come to an agreement with regards a specific learning plan for them. If a learner has any…

Delivering learning activities to a class, group or individual can often involve explaining the activity/Learning objective to them and if necessary, breaking down instructions one step at a time so that the children/young people are able to understand what they are expected to achieve. We would need to ensure they have the correct resources available for the activity, adapting the resources where required for learners with special educational needs. They may also need general help and support throughout the activity and we would be expected to provide this, whilst also checking the progress they are making throughout an activity. We would need to be aware of all the resources they would need during a planned class/activity and make sure they are available for the children/young people to use.…
