Abstract
There is an increasing move towards the use of environmentally safe lubricants. However, the development ofa common biodegradable base stock that could replace conventional ones is a big challenge. Synthetic lubricants, whether synthetic hydrocarbons, organic esters, or others, all have problems associated with their use. However, in general terms synthetic lubricants protect better, last longer, and outpelform their conventional mineral-based counteJparts in certain applications. Future lubricant specifIcations in view of the demand for improved peJjormance to meet stringent environmental regulations are the main drivers for new technological developments. As part of a study to produce polyol ester lubricant base stocks Fom C, polyols and
C6-C '4 carboxylic acids in the presence of eco~fi 'iendly catalysts, a series of" products has been synthesised. A biodegradable lubricant formulation for automotive transmission fluids has been developed based on a synthesised product as a base fluid. This paper reports on the physico-chemical characteristics and peJjormance evaluation results of this formulation, which is a promising base stock for automotive transmission fluids.

INTRODUCTION
Over the past decade there has been a steady increase in the demand for biodegradable, environmentally friendly lubricants, especial1y for use in ecological1y sensitive areas. In recent years, the environmental impact of large amounts oflubricants and industrial fluids has become an increasingly important issue, and the need for eco-friendly products has been discussed at length.
New applications are continually being found for these ecological1y harmless

1.0 IntroductionBiodiesel is defined as mono-alky esters of long -chain fatty acid. It is a fuel that derived from the vegetable oils, animal fats, which is similar to the diesel fuel except that it is made from the crops. It is produced from domestically grown, renewable sources, such as crop oils or animal fats which are then chemically converted into biodiesel (Habmigren, 2003). Unlike diesel, biodiesel contains no petroleum products and free of sulfur compounds and aromatics (Habmigren, 2003). Until today, it is still the only alternative fuel for motor vehicle. The biodiesel blends have ranged from 2/98% (B2), 20/80% (B20), to 100% (B100) (Hafman, 2003). The reasons biodiesel is a viable alternative to diesel from fossil fuels for trucks and buses are it can reduce the pollution, it can enhance the country's economy, and it is renewable sources and can produce almost same energy as diesel fuels.…
