212 Degrees
What is 212 degrees? Of course it’s a temperature, but it is also a metaphor to live up to. 212 degrees is taking the extra step from doing something good to doing something great. 212 degrees can apply to almost every aspect of your life, from school to sports, and from faith to attitude. How does it apply to your life? In school it is important to give it your all. Take me for example. I always try hard, but not always my hardest, sometimes waiting until the last minute to do a project or assignment. If I want to reach my “boiling point” of 212 degrees in school I need to make changes. I can do my school work ahead of time or take harder honors, AP, or online classes. If I take better notes then I will study better and make better scores on tests and quizzes. Sports are another example. I play softball and throw shot put and discus in track. I don’t always want to go to practice and when I don’t want to be there, I don’t try my hardest. Instead I should be happy and feel blessed that I have the ability to participate in these sports, and take it as an opportunity to improve my skills. Everyone makes mistakes so if I mess up in a game or don’t do well at a meet, I shouldn’t get down on myself. I should remember my mistakes and work on it at the next practice so I won’t make the same mistakes again. In my opinion, your faith is what helps to form your character and your beliefs. I am a proud Christian. Not everyone is the same religion, but everyone does have their own set of beliefs. There are days I wake up and don’t want to go to church or to my religious classes, but I need to look at it as a chance to thank the good Lord for letting me wake up, being healthy and happy. Some people do not have the choice of going to church and they wish they could. Attitude, it is the way you act and the way you present yourself to everyone in your life. There are days you are going to be in a bad mood and days you will be in a good mood. For those

For instance, when I was younger, I had failed to properly learn how to ride my bike at around the same age as the other kids. I had difficulty understanding the phrase “It is as easy as riding a bike”. Particularly, I had a difficult time balancing and moving forward on the bike. I was so fixated on what I was doing wrong, I did not realize what I was doing right and what I could do to improve on what I had done right. Learning how to ride a bike was one of the most painful, life-changing, experiences I had ever gone through. I was ten years old, still on training wheels. I was still wearing: knee pads, helmet; elbow pads; and gloves.…

It is a well-known fact in today’s world that a large percentage of students in college are failing their classes due to the fact that many of them are not worried about making good grades. In Amy Widner’s essay “The Pursuit of Just Getting by,” she shared her opinion about students that think it is cool to not try. “We are not fooling anybody but ourselves.” –Amy Widner. She addresses this issue as well as the ramifications for “practicing” bad habits in college. She goes on explaining the importance of a hard work ethic, skills, and most importantly knowledge. She believes that every student should make the most out of their education by doing all of the work they are assigned, and doing everything to the best of their abilities. Amy later explains since students are paying so much for a college education they should be pursuing…

Many people would agree that without faith, the world would be in chaos. The book Christian Foundation by Kathleen Fischer and Thomas Hart gives an interpretation on faith in our time. Many people would question the definition of faith. Faith is a gift, which is given by God to have trust in him and belief in him. This book is a great entry in anyone's life that has speculation on his or her own faith. The book has many ways into understanding ones own religion. It discusses the Bible, Jesus, Church, God's existence and Images of God. All of these chapters helped me get a better interpretation of what my religion entailed.…

In his essay, “I Just Wanna Be Average,” author Mike Rose says, “students will float to the mark you set” (164). From my past experiences, I completely agree that students will work harder if their teachers set the standards high. Generally, teenagers do not have high goals or standards for themselves, so it is up to the teachers to encourage and push the students towards success. Throughout his excerpt, Rose shows through numerous examples that teachers are a vital part to a student’s success in life.…

Failures should be sought after and not be concealed by our own ego; in fact, Thoreau, upon reflecting his future death, realized how he did not wish to be confined. In my own experience, I have also discovered this idea and the knowledge dawns on me whenever I reflect upon myself, while underneath the celestial night sky. The discovery was early on in my life, around 15, that I learnt to search for my own failures and not ignore them, but encourage them. Nevertheless, this may seem like an exhausting way of life, granted it has worn itself on me a few times, however it eventually grows to be looked at as an embarrassing starting point of an ability or perspective, which later can grow to a substantive experience.…

"The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short, but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark." This quote is significant to a wide variety of people for the mere fact that everyone goes through this. I think that at one point or another, most people will realize goals are meant to be set high rather than low. I also believe people often experience this danger through becoming lazy. The human race is much too powerful to be unproductive. If we set our aim too low, we become incapable of reaching our goals. True satisfaction comes from hard work and morals. An example of this comes from literature. It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini, tells the hardships of a young man who becomes suicidal and checks himself into a psychiatric hospital. The young man, Craig was at his deepest set of depression when he had no motivation. However, when Craig stayed positive with his goals set high; he overcame depression. Another example comes from a film called "Rudy." When Rudy experiences pain and hardships he refuses to be let down. As Rudy reaches for a goal most believe to be out of his reach, he does his best and proves them wrong. From history, we learn that Rosa Parks was a woman who embodied this quote. It was the year 1955 in Alabama, when Parks refused to obey a bus driver's order that she give up her seat and make room for a white passenger. Her action showed she had something to prove, and she was not going to be pushed around anymore.…

An example of this is when kids can’t wait to grow up, but when they do they wish they were young again. They are so focused on being able to be independent and make their own decisions that they miss all the small memories of their childhood. When they grow up they wish they would’ve appreciated the experience more rather than focusing on being an adult. Another example of this is when people go on a vacation and they are so focused on getting to their destination that they don’t enjoy the road trip itself. The journey is just as important as the vacation itself. You can meet new people and learn new things on the way but only if you aren’t worried about getting to the end point. Lastly, if someone is always hurrying through their shift at a job, they are missing out on the experience. They could be meeting and interacting with new people but they are too fixed on completing the task at hand. It would make the job more satisfying and they could get more out of the task. Everybody should take time to soak in each experience in life, no matter how…

Based upon my own meager understanding of theology and faith, I grew up with the belief that because I had been baptized as a child and attended church with my family then I would go to heaven when I died. Yet as I grew older I came to realize that this was not the case. I finally came to realize that just going to church did not give me the right to go to heaven. I had to have faith to get to heaven. Luther illustrates this point by noting the passage of John 11 [:25], "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live" (188). I came to realize that my going to church was only a "work" and that this alone would not offer me salvation.…

American climate scientist, Mark Caine, exclaims, “The first step toward success is taken when you refuse to be a captive of the environment in which you first find yourself”. Beginning my high school career, I thought high school would be an easy transition because I was accustomed to getting good grades in grammar school, so I did not put as much of an effort as I could have in my studies. The first biology test arrived, and I thought I was knowledgeable on the subject matter so I briefly looked over the material. Approximately a week later I got my test back and I was not satisfied with my grade. That happened for most of my first tests in each of my classes. I learned I would not be satisfied with my grades if I continued to keep those…

My personal faith and beliefs contribute to every aspect of my life. I come from a Christian family and a congregation of baptized believers in the Lord Jesus Christ.
