Task B - Guide
Produce a guide to raise awareness of health and safety in a social care setting. Include the following in your guide:
Bi A list of the laws relating to:
a) general health and safety in the setting
Safety Representatives and Safety Committees Regulations 1977
Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
b) moving and handling
Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992

Bii A list of the food standards that relate to social care settings.
Food Standards Act 1999
Food Safety Act 1990
Biii An outline of the main health and safety responsibilities of:
a) The social care worker
The social worker has many responsibilities, for example, infection control is a big responsibility of the care worker, simple things like changing gloves, washing hands and changing aprons will help stop spreading infections and diseases.
b) The employer or manager
Making sure staff have done all the training, eg health and safety, moving and handling.
Making sure all safety checks have been done in the home, for example, Pac tests, fire alarm checks.
c) Individuals using the service
Someone that is physically not in the best shape to look after themselves, they should always have someone help them with eg, bathing because of wet floors, or getting dressed because of falls. It’s basically thinking of the safety of them and are they able to do things in the best ability.

The Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
-to take reasonable care of your own and others’ health and safety
- to co-operate fully with anyone who is responsible for carrying out duties regarding health and safety in order to help them carry out their tasks
-to not intentionally or recklessly interfere with, or misuse, anything provided for the purposes of health, safety or welfare
- to observe the safety rules. Failure to comply with these rules could mean you are liable under the disciplinary
