"When I set forth I was already ill, and soon became seasick. We reached Hong Kong, which delighted me. There I was introduced to some leading Spaniards, one of them Varanda, who was, they said, Secretary to General [Emilio] Terrero. I traveled about with him several days, especially on a trip which Varanda, Basa, and I took to Macao, to see that Portuguese colony; and to visit Mr. Lecaroz, in whose house we were guests. Lecaroz, Basa, and the other Filipinos of Hong Kong are partisans and promoters of the book Noli Me Tangere. In Hong Kong I investigated many important matters, for example concerning the riches of the Dominicans, concerning their missions, concerning the Augustinians, etc. There I came to know D. Balbino Mauricio, (02) an unfortunate man worthy of a better fate, and his acquaintanceship was useful for me, for it prepared me for a fate which may be much worse!"…

Andres Bonifacio was born in Tondo, Manila, on Nov. 30, 1863. He grew up in the slums and knew from practical experience the actual conditions of the class struggle in his society. Orphaned early, he interrupted his primary schooling in order to earn a living as a craftsman and then as clerk-messenger and agent of foreign commercial firms in Manila. Absorbing the teachings of classic rationalism from the works of José Rizal, Victor Hugo's Les Miserables, Eugène Sue's The Wandering Jew, books on the French Revolution, and the lives of the presidents of the United States, Bonifacio acquired an understanding of the dynamics of the socio-historical process. This led him to join the Liga Filipina, which Rizal organized in 1892 for the purpose of uniting and intensifying the nationalist movement for reforms.…

Ideas are meant not to immortalize history but rather to make sense of it. The manufacture of such ideas is influenced by circumstances that shape it and also, the vital thoughts of their authors. If we are to analyze our history, we could see that ideas are not only important for their interpretation of our history but also for their contribution to changes in our nation. Groundbreaking ideas have moved our nation to change. It is thus valuable for us to recall our own political thinkers. I feel sad after watching the documentary film of Andres Bonifacio because his death is a justified execution for treason and a murder fueled by political politics. Seing what's going on in our country now, and reading about what has happened before, I don't really see much difference. It's all about people not getting along, egos, ambitions and alliances. If they were just united during that time I think they will be successful in their mission of defending our country from enemies and gain the independence that they were hoping for. I admire Andres Bonifacio not just for being a self-educated man but also for his courage to organize a secret society called Katipunan. I think what happen to the Tejeros convention was a big mistake because he don’t deserve to be insulted by Daniel Tirona just because of his educational attainment. That is why I understand him when he left and declared the results of the election null and void in his capacity as the Supremo of the Katipunan. And just because of this, he was executed together with his brother in Maragondon Cavite. It is really absurd unfair and I am very disappointed with what had happened because unlike other Filipino heroes who were killed by enemies they were killed by our fellow Filipinos.…
