53.3 Explain how to apply holistic assessment when planning assessment:
It is very important when planning assessments so that a variety of required evidence can be achieved from one assessment occasion. To do this I need to take into account all findings from the initial assessment and the units relevant to the learners preferred route. All the necessary documents must be at hand to help me achieve this. I will need to gauge the level at which the learner is currently at to ensure I am assessing them at the appropriate level. Main activities can be established by discussing and questioning the learner about what they actually do on a day to day basis. I will then be able to produce a list of their main tasks and duties, from this I will try to group them into the key activities then try to link the units to these activities so they can be assessed together. Any specialist activities will need to be identified and I will focus on these units as and when they occur and try to link them together. Any specific learner needs will have

During an assessment I may discover that my learner has not proved their skill against all the criteria that I had planned to assess. I would however be able to sign off what they have managed to achieve, and then update their assessment plan to assess the remaining criteria at a later date when they are ready. Another option to evidence any gaps if appropriate at the time could be by identifying how the learner integrates for example, knowledge and understanding of their practice which would include asking questions, or engage in a discussion with the learner to evidence any gaps. This must all be accurately recorded. A witness possibly a supervisor may also be able to give a statement or testimony regarding the learner’s competence.     In order to determine “the level and which specific aspects learners need to improve on” (Gravells, 2012, p.50), teachers should administer initial and diagnostic assessments to them before or at the start of a course or programme. The results of initial and diagnostic assessments can be used to help learners agree on Individual Learning Plans specifically designed to meet their learning needs. Some learners might have expectations of making rapid progress within a course or programme but unexpectedly experience difficulties due to a lack of personal or functional skills. Initial and diagnostic assessments should help teachers identify problems early relating to their learners’ personal skills.     Two of the assessment activities that I use are Worksheets (or written questions) and photographic evidence. These assessment activities are the most commonly found within my level 1 group. Worksheets within my area are a very versatile way of collecting information from the student, they can contain short answer questions, multiple choice questions etc. Worksheets are extremely valid because they are usually created by the awarding body of that qualification or by the teachers who have read through what the learners need to achieve. Because it is a direct way of assessing, the learners will not “go off task” as the worksheets are designed to be short, sharp ways of assessing that require the learner to answer two or three questions about a particular criteria. Ideally, the learner should be assessed on different occasions, and by different people on each criteria, so that this assessment becomes more reliable. Once the learner has answered these questions to show their understanding, and have had the criteria explained to them, they would have passed that one element within their criteria, therefore making it even more sufficient, fair and reliable. Worksheets are very easy to differentiate depending on the level of learners/ course/ certain individuals. If you have someone in your class who is dyslexic then you can differentiate a worksheet into more picture based learning where possible and also if you have someone who excels in lessons you can differentiate the worksheets to enable more information from the learner. The fact that this can be done so easily makes it fair. A question of authenticity can be raised with worksheets because answers can be very easily duplicated within the classroom, however, it is up to the teacher to recognise that this is happening and stop it.…
