Course outline

Course Objectives: In a country the state of the economy affects everyone, so macroeconomic issues play an important role in politics and business. The purpose of this course is to give ideas on economic aggregates such as national income, employment, investment, inflation, foreign exchange, export and import. The overall economic conditions of an economy influence the economic activities pursued by firms, entrepreneurs, business collectives and also by any individual entity. This course will also deal with the policies which influence the macroeconomic aggregates. This course will have an applied stance with discourse on real life macro economic issues with reference to Bangladesh and global situations. The theoretical aspects of the macro aggregates will be discussed in the context of the state of the Bangladesh economy, its policy decisions regime and the institutions involved in economic activities.

Topics
These generally cover broad aspects and teaching may not follow the exact titles. The faculty may change any topic below, exclude, and include any topic during teaching of the course. 1. Concepts and issues of macroeconomics; National Income: concept, components, circular flow; National Income Accounting in Bangladesh; Business Cycle. 2. Financial system; Monetary policy.

3. Money and Inflation; effects, measures to tackle inflation. 4. Major aspects of budget formulation in Bangladesh; Role of budget in development and stability of Bangladesh economy. 5. Unemployment: concept, problems of unemployment. 6. Investment: Importance, Measures to increase investment in the economy. 7. Capital Market: Present State, measures to develop it. 8. Foreign Exchange Reserve, Foreign exchange management, Remittances. 9. Corporate governance, transparency and accountability; Corporate Social responsibility (CSR) 10. Bangladesh Economy: Macroeconomic Management, Challenges for sustained growth, stability and distributional equity.
Exam and Quiz One mid-term and one final test will be scheduled. One or more quiz tests may be scheduled on class days without prior notice.
Term Paper Topics will be given to the students and each student will choose one topic and write a paper of maximum 5,000 words (for the main body). Tables, appendix, references will be extra. Plagiarism will result in “F” grade for the paper. Hard copy of the term paper to be given to the faculty and Soft copy should be mailed to the GA’s email.

Suggested Reading Materials Some text books are suggested. Students are required to search for references on relevant topics. Students should not rely on only class lectures and handouts. Materials on Bangladesh economy and other countries should be studied by the students.
