1. Inflation
A rise in the general level of prices of goods and services in an economy over a period of time.
Stock market loses 40% in an 18-month time period.
Rise in unemployment.
1970’s stock market is a disaster.
Inflation rate in the U.S. reached its 20th century highest.
2. Watergate
Occurred June 17th, 1972.
Nixon had nothing to do with the actual burglary.
Situation led him to resign in August of 1974.
Bob Woodard and Carl Bernstein played a major role in uncovering the scandal.
Nixon tried to cover up for the burglars.
3. Nixon Resigns
The whole Watergate Scandal caused him to resign.
Resigned August 9th, 1974.
Stated, "I hope that I will have hastened the start of the process of healing which is so desperately needed in America."
First president to resign.
Resigned to avoid getting impeached.
4. Vietnam War Ends
After a lot of negotiations and the bombing of North Vietnam, peace treaty was signed in January 1973.
The treaty signed was Paris Peace Accords.
U.S. forces were completely withdrawn.
War did not end until April 1975.
58,282 American soldiers lost their lives and another 303,644 Americans were wounded.
5. John Emil List
Fugitive convicted of murder.
Killed his wife, mother, and three children in their home in Westfield, New Jersey on November 9th, 1971.
Disappeared for 18 years.
Was caught on June 1st, 1989 after being put on America’s Most Wanted.
Died of pneumonia while in prison in 2008.
6. Roe v. Wade-1973
Issue on abortion.
Decision legalized abortion in the first trimester of pregnancy.
Decision written by Justice Harry Blackmun.
Based on two cases, that of an unmarried woman from Texas and a married mother of three from Georgia.
7. Jimmy Carter
39th president.
Awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2002.
First U.S. president to be born in a hospital.
Served in the US Navy, 1946-1953.
The only president in U.S. history to serve a full term as president, but never get to nominate a judge for the U.S. Supreme
