Jheon Webb Earth Science
Mr. Tokarski Article Summary Earthworms, ants, termites: The real engineers of the ecosystem Date:October 23, 2014 Source: Investigación y Desarrollo
The topic of Earth Science that this article falls under is soil science. The contribution or advantage of having a home garden is the preservation of biodiversity, or the diversity among and within plant and animal species in an environment.
Economics and human health prompted a multidisciplinary group at the South Border College in Mexico to work on a project in Tabasco, a south state of the country, which is trying to improve the production and environmental management of plantations. Multidisciplinary means “composed of or combining several usually separate branches oflearning or fields of expertise”. Organisms such as earthworms, ants, termites, centipedes, beetles, grasshoppers, cockroaches and woodlice, which may also be called "ecosystem engineers", fulfill various functions like allowing the soil to absorb organic materials such as leaves, wood, trunks and branches. They also maintain an ecological balance which prevents the invasion of pests and makes soil more fertile without using chemicals.
From this article I learned that it is more efficient to have a garden at home than it is to go to the grocery store. The vegetation grown in a home garden is healthier.
Question for the author: How long does it take to develop a home garden?

Ants, moles, snakes, and earthworms are just a small number of the many organisms that are found in soil. Essentially, organisms and soil depend on each other to remain balanced. Organisms that live in soil provide "ecosystem services, such as maintaining soil fertility, preventing soil erosion, breaking down toxic materials, and cleansing water" (Berg, 2013).…
