11.3 Hess's Law on Combustion of Magnesium
Design
Objective: Find the standard molar enthalpy of combustion for magnesium.

Manipulated Variables- volume of HCl, length of magnesium strip, mass of magnesium oxide,
Controlled Variable- type of calorimeter (Styrofoam cup)
Responding Variable- change in temperature
Procedure:
1. Cut out 3 pieces of magnesium strips each with lengths of maximum 5 centimeters. 2. Measure and record the lengths of the magnesium. 3. Scrub the magnesium strips with steel wool to clean out impurities. 4. Pour out approximately 310 mL of hydrochloric acid from the stock container. 5. Use a 50mL or 100mL graduated cylinder to measure approximately 50mL of hydrochloric acid. 6. Record the volume of hydrochloric acid. 7. Measure and record the initial temperature of hydrochloric acid. 8. Pour hydrochloric acid into the Styrofoam cup (the calorimeter) and add magnesium in. 9. Close the lid immediately with the thermometer inside the calorimeter. 10. Wait till the temperature is stable and then record it. 11. Repeat steps 5 to 10 for three consecutive and precise trials (ΔrHm value of each trial should be within 10% of each other). 12. For the reaction of magnesium oxide and hydrochloric acid, tare the scale with the Styrofoam cup on it. 13. Add an amount of maximum1 gram of magnesium oxide. 14. Record the mass of magnesium oxide. 15. Repeat steps 5 to 7. 16. Pour the hydrochloric acid from the graduated cylinder into the Styrofoam cup. 17. Repeat steps 9 and 10.

To accomplish this, three different methods were used. Titration was used to react NaOH with HCl to determine the amount of H+ left over after the reaction is complete. Crystallization was used to determine the amount of MgCl₂ made after the reaction is done. Both of these methods allowed us to calculate the amount of H+ reacting with the amount of Mg. The gas law method and the Ideal Gas Law was also used to determine the mole ratio of magnesium metal to hydrochloric acid by measuring the amount of hydrogen gas based on the pressure and temperature changes during the reaction. With the results from each procedure, graphs were constructed and the most accurate and precise method was discernible.…

To find this formula, a strip of Magnesium ribbon was burned in a crucible over a flame from a bunson burner. After the strip caught fire multiple times with the cover on, and 10 drops of distilled water were added, and the crucible was lightly heated. The crucible was then weighed and the mass recorded. Calculations were performed and the mole ratio of Mg to O was recorded. The results of other lab groups performing the same experiment were also recorded.…

The purpose of this lab was to determine the atomic weight of magnesium by measuring the amount of hydrogen gas evolved when hydrochloric acid reacted with magnesium. In order to measure the atomic weight I needed to measure the amount of the hydrogen gas that was evolved in reaction to the acid of the magnesium. The reaction used was: Mg + 2HCl --> H2 + Mg2+ (aq) + 2Cl- (aq). The major findings of this experiment were that there was a chemical reaction between hydrochloric acid and magnesium, and the reaction produced the hydrogen gas. The results also indicated how many moles of hydrogen gas were equal to the amount of moles of magnesium consumed.…

Experiment one is in support of the conservation of energy pertaining to chemicals because heat energy was released when magnesium (Mg) and hydrochloric acid (2 HCl) to create magnesium chlorine (MgCl₂) and hydrogen (H₂). this reaction was exothermic because heat was produced in the process and released into the surroundings. The energy did not disappear in the reaction as it was clearly released from the substance. Therefore, the law of conservation of energy was in effect during the entirety of this…
