1 John
1 John was written by John sometime between 90-95 AD as a personal letter to believers. He is writing concerning the assurance of eternal life as it seems though perhaps some had some doubts as to whether or not they were really saved because of sin. They key word throughout the entirety of the book is fellowship. He discusses some of the hindrances to fellowship, conditions for fellowship, and the benefits of fellowship. He was really trying to encourage the believers to live a Christian life that will lead to assurance. His secondary purpose was to refute Gnosticism and the false teachings related to it that denied some of the aspects of Christ. 1 John 1:5-2:2 is a discussion of the basis for fellowship to emphasize the main objective of this letter which is concerning fellowship with the Father and with one another. He detailed the principles that are really the basis and the foundation for all true and genuine fellowship with God. Verse 5 begins with a declaration of a message that they have heard from Christ that proclaims that “God is light and that in Him there is no darkness at all.” These verse begins with the same emphasis on “this message” as being what he had heard just as he did in the prologue of the letter when he discussed the things in which they had “heard, seen with their eyes, which they had looked at and their hands had touched.” It would seem as though he is referring to Jesus when he states that this message is that which they have heard from a seemingly ambiguous “him”. John is purposely emphasizing that this message is “apostolic in authority and also divine” which would make it from Jesus (Elwell 1179). He shows the importance of this letter because it came from God as well as the timelessness of it as it did not originate with John or with any other apostle or writer (Kistemaker 241). This fact seems as though it is emphasized to show the authority behind this message unlike that of the message of these false teachers. This message

To conclude, the Gospel of John holds very important details about Jesus and how to live like Him that no other gospel does. Without the book of John a good grasp of Jesus would still be obtainable, however the question of “now what” would never be answered. The multi sides of Jesus would have been missed, not only was He God in the Flesh, but also a healer, friend, and most importantly the only way for us to have a relationship with God our father. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John…

The book of John has a narrative Genre. The theme of this book is how God refers to himself as “I am.” The very first verse of the Book says “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1) This book talks about how God is working through Jesus to let everyone know his Word. Through the book of Jesus is working miracles such as turning water to wine for a wedding celebration. Long after when Judas brings the soldiers to arrest Jesus, he is quickly put on trial. Pilate he is the Roman governor, and he had no basis to charge Jesus and tried to release him but eventually gave Jesus to the Jews to be crucified at Golgotha. After his death, 3 days later he resurrects from the Tomb telling Mary Magdalene that God has a…

“Not only is John 's gospel written for evangelism, it seems to be written particularly for Jewish evangelism. From the beginning, the book of John is geared to Jewish thinking. John 1:1 sounds very much like the beginning of Genesis, the first book of the Hebrew Scriptures Taken with the Genesis account that Elohim (God) created the heavens and the earth, the gospel of John reinforces the idea of Messiah as the Creator Himself. Genesis 1:26 records Elohim as saying, "Let Us make man in Our image.…" The Hebrew Elohim is a plural noun. It embodies a sense of composite unity which, seen in the context of the gospel accounts, relates to God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit working…

In chapter 1 John describes Jesus as the “Word” in a poetic structure. In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God and what God was the Word was pg. 112 (Culpepper, 1998). Culpepper’s account describes a prologue then the prologue was divided into three parts. It is very important for one to understand the prologue. The prologue is divided into the first Strophe which describes the Word and God. This is saying that we cannot separate the Word and God. The second Strophe “The Word and Creation” In Genesis, we see Jesus in the beginning with the Father. Jesus is referred to as the light. When a man is in darkness the Light comes to give light and life to all those who will believe on Him. John understands that Jesus was the Light, he declares that he John was not…

Chapter 1 In the beginning of the chapter, John refers to Jesus as the “word”; later John describes that everything “came into being” through Jesus. As John the Baptist was baptizing people he saw Jesus, and yelled: “here is the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” Additionally, John describes that the “holy spirit” disguised as a dove appeared when Jesus was baptized. Lastly, Jesus chooses his first couple of disciples.…

" This word was eternal and powerful just as God was and is. John slowly builds on the reader's understanding of who and what this word is. Not leaving the readers in suspense long, the author then point blank states: "the word was God." From a Jewish background where Monotheist was pushed, perhaps this was a very puzzling statement. Throughout the second verse, John keeps dropping hints on the magnitude of this "word."…

But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do the things which I say? Whoever comes to me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the sand without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of the house was great.…

Chapter 3 verses 16 through 21 of the Gospel of John take a moment to explain the major question: Why did God send Jesus to earth? According to John, who may actually be a variety of authors, God sent God’s only son here to die out of pure love for humanity and the world God created, proof that all believers would forever belong to the kingdom of the Lord. John clarifies that Jesus actually is not here to condemn anyone, rather, he is here to bring salvation to the people of the earth. There is a concrete ultimatum: those who believe will be spared from any judgment, those who do not believe will suffer great consequence. This is explained through a metaphor of light and darkness, Jesus being the brilliant light, sin and evil being the darkness.…
