05.05 mixtures and solutions: Lab report: outline

Ink chromatography

Chromatography is the separation of a mixture by passing it in solution or suspension or as a vapor (as in gas chromatography) through a medium in which the components move at different rates. It is used to separate substances. The purpose of this lab is to examine and see the different colors that make up each marker. We will be able to tell by the strips of chromatography paper mixed with salt solution.

Materials:
Four different markers (including one black permanent marker)
Rubbing alcohol or isopropyl alcohol
Coffee filters (2)
Tall glasses or plastic cups (2)
Pencil
Ruler
Tape
Table salt
Water
Measuring cups/spoons
Clean pitcher or 2-liter bottle

Procedure:
1. Cut the coffee filter into a rectangle measuring three cm by nine cm. Do this twice.
2. Using a pencil (do not use a pen), draw a line one cm (1/2 inch) from the edge of one end of one strip of paper.
3. Make four dots and label which marker is being tested.
4. With the markers, make dots with the different colors and let them dry.
5. Prepare the salt solution by mixing 1/8 teaspoon of salt and three cups of water in a clean pitcher or 2-liter bottle. Stir or shake the solution until it is dissolved.
6. Pour solution into a glass, 1/4th inch high.
7. Tape the strip to a pencil and rest the pencil on top of the jar so that the strip hangs into the jar. The goal is to have the end of the chromatography strip just touching the surface of the solvent solution, with the colored dots above the surface of the liquid. Make sure that the colored spots do not come in direct contact with the liquid in the bottom of the glass.

    The first step was to prepare the two filter paper for the experiment so you can measure the different columns at the end of the experiment. For that to happen you have to draw a horizontal line with a pencil. The line has to be 1cm above the bottom. After that you draw nine cross lines along the horizontal line with a space between each cross line of 1.5cm. Now you have to mark each area with a shortcut of the substance you are going to put on the horizontal line. The next step is to prepare each of your substances in the 24-well plate. Once you put all the substances in the well plate and dissolved the color from the M&Ms and Kool Aid with some drops of water, you dip a clean toothpick in the dye. You mark carefully a little point on the horizontal in the center of the section you marked with the substance and make sure the point is not too big because otherwise the experiment won’t work as good. The filter paper needs to dry for a few minutes before you form both to a cylinder and staple it so it stays a cylinder. Before you can keep going with the experiment you have to take a 50ml plastic beaker and fill that one with 50ml distilled water, solve a pinch salt in the water and stir until you can’t see crystals anymore. Pour a little bit of that solution in a petri dish but make sure it will be below the horizontal line you draw on the filter paper. Set…
