Question One- How can the term ‘physical development’ be defined?
Physical development is the development of a child from a helpless newly born baby to an independent child through their overall physical growth and development of their ability to control individual parts of the body. Physical development has many aspects which put together lead to the progression of a child’s physical ability, including the development of the brain. During their physical development, a young baby develops their Inhibition of primitive reflexes, present at birth, which are replaced with postural reflexes (O’Connor and Daly, 2016). If these reflexes don’t stop it can affect the child’s physical development potentially leading to development delay. The EYFS covers a child’s development from birth to 5 years’ old through both Prime Areas and Specific areas.
Prime areas are used to reflect upon a child’s health development and check that a child’s development is progressing by health visitors at the two-year check (NCB, 2017). There are three prime areas: Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language and Physical Development.
The specific areas aim to create a holistic learning journey for a child which lead on to the school curriculum when the child goes to school. The specific areas for learning are Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the world and Expressive arts and design.
