Graduate Seminar: Thinking About Making The Practice of Art in a Global Society
Monday 5-7:50

Thinking about making is a discussion-based seminar. The course seeks to bridge the gap between the studio practice and the contemporary global art world. The course will introduce students to work being produced and exhibited around the world through examining international biennials. Additionally this course will explore current modes of creative practice; addressing questions related to the content of art; the role locale plays in the creative practice, the audience. Students’ will answer for themselves questions addressing “their” art making practice and how their practice operates within the larger context of the global art world? Instructional Technique
The class will be lecture/ discussion. There will be slide , film and student presentations.

Evaluation
Grades will be determined by evaluation of class participation and assignments
Reading response papers 8 40%
Presentation on international exhibition 10%
Final project (15% written statement 15% visual presentation) 30%
Visualizing place 20 % Course Requirements
Class attendance is mandatory. You will not receive extra credit for attending class.
You are expected to be prepared for class with discussion questions from the readings your participation is required. You have eight response papers they must be handed in the night they are due. No late response papers will be accepted. Additional assignments are to be handed in on time. In class presentations will take place through out the term. You must have a written excuse for health or emergency to miss class when another student is presenting. Missing the presentation of another will result in a failing grade. (Refer to course outline for presentations) More than 3 absences will lower your final grade and four absences will result in a failing grade. Please be on time class
